By Kaija Jussinoja

Officials are warning travellers they may have been exposed to measles after an infected individual returned to B.C. from Southeast Asia.

The infected person lives in the Fraser Health region, which stretches from Burnaby to Hope, and arrived in Vancouver on Tuesday, Feb. 11, according to a joint statement issued Saturday by the Fraser and Vancouver Coastal health authorities.

Anyone who was aboard Air Canada Flight 66 from Bangkok to Vancouver that day may have been exposed to measles, as well as anyone who spent time in the international arrivals area of YVR between 7 a.m. and 9:30 a.m., officials said...

Health officials have confirmed a second case of measles in Metro Vancouver.

According to a statement from Vancouver Coastal Health (VCH), this case was identified in a resident who lives in the health authority and travelled to Southeast Asia.

This individual was in the same party as the first case, who has since been confirmed to be a resident in the Fraser Health region.

VCH advises that members of the public may have been exposed to the measles virus if they were travelling on Air Canada Flight 66, which arrived at Vancouver International Airport on Feb. 11, 2025.

The warning also applies to anyone who spent time in the international arrivals area of the airport, including the customers and baggage area, on Feb. 11 from 7 a.m. to 9:30 a.m.

The health authority confirmed that there were no other public exposures, and officials are working to contact individuals who may have been exposed to the virus...

Fraser Health confirms another travel-related measles case in the Lower Mainland
People who were in emergency department at Royal Columbian Hospital in New Westminster may have been exposed to measles.

Fraser Health is warning people who visited the emergency room at Royal Columbian Hospital earlier this week that they may have been exposed to measles.

In a March 6 news release, Fraser Health stated a new case of measles infection has been confirmed in the Lower Mainland. The health authority has determined the infection was acquired by a resident who had travelled to Southeast Asia.

According to Fraser Health, members of the public who were in the RCH emergency department from 2:30 p.m. on Monday, March 3 until 2:30 a.m. on Tuesday, March 4 may have been exposed to measles. This case is unrelated to a previous case identified in February...

Two new travel-related measles cases in B.C. as exposure areas increase
by Ashley Joannou, The Canadian Press March 8, 2025 1:54 pm

Two new travel-related cases of measles have been confirmed in British Columbia’s Lower Mainland, bringing the recent tally to four, and leading to a call for people to confirm they have been fully vaccinated.

An advisory from Fraser Health says both infected people travelled in the same party from South Korea as another person whose measles infection was identified earlier this week, but are not connected to a case identified in February...

...It said members of the public may have been exposed if they were on flight KE75 from Seoul to Vancouver on Feb. 17 or in the Vancouver International Airport on the same day from 3:20 p.m. to 6:20 p.m.

Exposure was also possible at the PriceSmart supermarket at 9899 Austin Rd. from 9 a.m. to 11:20 a.m. on Feb. 20 and 21, at Big Way Hot Pot restaurant in Coquitlam from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m. on Feb. 28, and at the Royal Columbian Hospital emergency department from 2:30 p.m. on March 3 to 2:30 a.m. on March 4.

Newhouse said people who may have been exposed should watch for symptoms like fever, cough, red eyes or conjunctivitis, or a runny nose...

New cases of measles in British Columbia

The number of measles cases in British Columbia has risen to 63, up from Tuesday's tally.

Radio-Canada
Posted yesterday at 9:48 PM CDT

The Interior Health Authority has seen new cases of measles since Tuesday, with infections in Kamloops, Kelowna, Salmon Arm and the Nelson area, areas that encompass the southern Interior of British Columbia.

The first case was identified in Kamloops on Tuesday.

The number of cases detected in the province now stands at 63, including 13 active cases.

Of the 13 active cases, three are in the Interior, one is in the Fraser Valley and nine are in the northern part of the province, near Wonowon and Fort St. John.

The Interior Health Authority is asking people who have been exposed to the virus to monitor their symptoms for three weeks after exposure.

[Symptoms] include fever, a dry cough, a runny nose, and red eyes, followed a few days later by a rash that usually starts on the face and quickly spreads to the rest of the body.

The British Columbia Centre for Disease Control is tracking possible exposures on ferries and at airports and is urging the public to get vaccinated.

Dr. Jia Hu, acting medical director of immunization programs at the British Columbia Centre for Disease Control, hopes to avoid the situation in Alberta, where more than 1,000 cases have been reported.

The doctor warns of immune amnesia caused by measles, which can destroy the immune system and have an effect for several years.

In this sense, he encourages the public to get vaccinated, despite skepticism.

"I think vaccine hesitancy and skepticism have increased since the pandemic. There's a lot more misinformation out there, and the people spreading it are much more organized."
A quote fromDr. Jia Hu, British Columbia Centre for Disease Control

In a media briefing on Wednesday, Prime Minister David Eby denounced the spread as an unfortunately predictable consequence of the recklessness of anti-vaccination politicians.

Dr. Jia Hu urges the public to check the date of their last vaccination.

You can contact your doctor, the public health provider who administered your vaccines, or you can even check your vaccination status on Health Gateway, the provincial portal.
