A BRISBANE woman has died after contracting diphtheria, but Queensland Health says an outbreak is unlikely because most Australians are immunised against it.
The 22-year-old died in hospital last week after contracting the bacterial disease from a friend who had returned from overseas.
It's believed she was not immunised.
Diphtheria is an infection of the throat and nose, and is spread through close contact. It can lead to difficulty in swallowing, breathlessness and suffocation.
A Queensland Health spokeswoman said diphtheria is rare in Australia and the last confirmed case in Queensland was in 1993.
