vying with georgia for ground zero of the fall wave. it's nerve wracking expecting the kids to start coming home with it almost immediately.

i guess this is the point where the flu goes or gets off the pot. if it's going to explode, it should be real soon now, pretty much everywhere. if it doesn't, could we have dodged one?[/]

BREVARD COUNTY, Fla. -- Summer vacation is over for some Central Florida students. Students in Brevard County went back to school Monday.
The county got a state exemption from the "Save Our Summers" legislation. Parents told Eyewitness News that they are pleased with the early start.
Students were back to school two weeks early and all over Brevard they have officially hit the books.

"Starting two weeks early, it gave us a great kick-off for all of Central Florida," said Brevard County schools spokeswoman, Christine Davis.
Parents and school officials are also focusing on swine flu on the first day back to class. This week, students will watch a video about swine flu that will feature some basic things they can do to prevent getting sick.

"We can't stop the tide of flu from coming in, but we can reduce the number of people who become severely ill from it," said Dr. Thomas Frieden, CDC Director.
Brevard public schools were cleaned over the summer and hand sanitizer will be readily available for students.

Brevard County schools are just one of ten districts in the state that opened its doors before others. It's recognized by Florida as a high-performing school district because it meets certain factors every year. "Obviously student achievement is a criteria; class size, being efficient and being efficient fiscally with audits," Davis said. Since 2004, the state has given Brevard Schools an "A" rating.

And because Brevard County schools opened early, students will get out in June, two weeks ahead of others. There are more benefits to the schedule. "It also gives our high school students the flexibility to take semester exams before Christmas break," Davis said.

"Instructional time is very valuable for us. It seems to work out for Brevard County," Apollo elementary school Principal Pamela O'Kell said.
Students attend the same number of hours each day and the required 180 days each year.

"Some students need more attention when it comes to education," said parent Iris Ortiz.

A district spokeswoman says it does not cost any more or any less to open schools earlier.
