Gulf mammal deaths likely far higher than body count, scientists say

For every dead dolphin or whale that washes up on Gulf Coast beaches, there may be 50 more that no one ever sees, a new study suggests.
Natural factors and last year's oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico probably have caused thousands more dolphin and whale deaths than have been observed, a team of scientists says in a study published Wednesday by the journal Conservation Letters.

The scientists, led by Rob Williams, said 101 cetacean, or marine mammal, carcasses had been observed in the water or on beaches as of the time of their study.

After analyzing historical data on populations and death rates of 14 species in the northern Gulf, the scientists determined that carcasses are found in only 2% of cetacean deaths.

Dolphin deaths may be caused indirectly by oil spill

ORLANDO, Fla. -- The massive BP oil spill might have contributed indirectly to the unusually high number of young dolphins dying in the Gulf of Mexico recently, a University of Central Florida marine researcher said Thursday.

The oil, and dispersants used to clean up the spill, may have disrupted the food chain and prevented dolphin mothers from building up insulating blubber they need.

That could contribute to calves dying, though there are other possible explanations, Graham Worthy said.

More than 150 bottlenose dolphins have washed up on Gulf beaches since January, including 65 newborn, stillborn or premature. Only a tiny percentage of dolphin bodies reach shore, so the actual deaths are likely much higher, Graham said.

Dead dolphins still a concern on Gulf Coast

Dead dolphins have washed ashore in the hundreds along the central Gulf Coast, prompting federal officials to launch an open-ended investigation.

Since February 2010, 567 dead or distressed whales and dolphins have washed ashore in Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and Florida. Of those, 274 washed up in Louisiana.

?We're still getting elevated numbers of dolphin strandings,? said Erin Foug?res, a National Marine Fisheries Service official.

The strandings peaked this year in March, with 72 reported from Florida to the Texas-Louisiana border. Sixty-seven of those were bottlenose dolphins. Since August, 52 more strandings have been reported, including nine this month.

Some dolphins in massive die-off killed by bacterial infection, NOAA says

Five bottlenose dolphins found dead in Louisiana waters or stranded on beaches since February 2010 were infected with brucellosis, a bacterial infection better known in the United States for killing cattle, bison and elk, pathology experts contracted by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration said Thursday.


What the researchers don't know yet, they said, is the source of the deadly bacteria, including whether oil spilled from the BP Macondo well in 2010 played a role in the brucellosis deaths. Of the five dead dolphins, three were fetuses and two were adult dolphins. Nor are the pathologists yet able to determine the cause of the deaths or strandings of an additional 580 marine mammals along the northern Gulf of Mexico coast, most of which were bottlenose dolphins.

Although researchers admit statistics involving strandings before the past two years are less than complete, NOAA has documented an average of about 70 marine mammal strandings a year between 2002 and 2009, compared to 265 in 2010 and 320 through Oct. 23 this year.

Additional testing is underway to determine whether oil or a chemical in the oil may have left the dolphins more susceptible to the marine strain of the Brucella bacteria, which caused the brucellosis, said Dr. Teri Rowles, a veterinarian and coordinator of NOAA's National Marine Mammal Health and Stranding Response Program.

NOAA finds bacterial infection as cause of death for five northern Gulf dolphins; investigation continues

Pathology experts contracted by NOAA have identified the bacteria Brucella in five bottlenose dolphins that died in the northern Gulf of Mexico. These five are among the 580 dolphins in higher than expected strandings that began in February 2010 and are continuing. NOAA has declared it an “unusual mortality event,” triggering a focused, expert investigation into the cause.

Brucella bacteria are commonly found in populations of marine and terrestrial animals throughout the world, but infection in humans is rare in the U.S., and there are no documented U.S. cases of Brucella in humans originating from marine sources. NOAA advises anyone who sees a stranded dolphin in the Gulf of Mexico region to call 1-877-WHALE HELP (1-877-942-5343). The stranded dolphin should not be touched, and pets should be kept away from the dolphin as well. The public should also avoid touching live dolphins in the wild.

“We believe these five dolphins died from brucellosis. Die-offs from bacterial infections could be occurring because the bacterium has become more lethal, but they could also be occurring, or be more severe, because the dolphins are more susceptible to infection. Severe environmental stress, including from exposure to oil, could have reduced the animals’ ability to fight infection," said Teri Rowles, DVM, Ph.D., coordinator of NOAA’s National Marine Mammal Health and Stranding Response Program.

"Right now, there is insufficient information to distinguish between these possible explanations for the increases in mortality of dolphins in the northern Gulf of Mexico. We continue to investigate the factors causing the die-off, and any possible connection to the BP-Deepwater Horizon oil spill."

Scientists have tested 21 dolphins for Brucella so far, with five testing positive. The two adults and three fetuses with brucellosis died off the Louisiana coast between June 2010 and February 2011. The cause of death for the 16 dolphins that did not test positive for Brucella is still under investigation.Scientists are also looking at additional samples from more dolphins.

NOAA is working with a team of marine mammal health experts, including veterinarians, epidemiologists, biologists and toxicologists, to investigate the cause of death for as many of the 580 dolphins as possible. The working group that advises NOAA on these investigations developed a multi-tiered approach earlier this year. The findings may take years to complete and will be made public when scientifically and legally appropriate. Given the decomposition of some of the carcasses, some analyses cannot be performed.

“As we examine the causes of this unusual mortality event, we are investigating the most common causes of die-offs in dolphins first, including infectious disease and marine biotoxins,” said Stephanie Venn-Watson, DVM, MPH, a veterinary epidemiologist and chair of the working group. “With this unusual mortality event including a high number of fetuses, we included Brucella testing due to its known ability to infect dolphins and cause their pregnancies to fail.”

On land, Brucella can infect cattle, goats, dogs and pigs and can lead to illness, including failed pregnancies. The Center for Disease Control and Prevention reports that brucellosis in people is rare in the United States, with approximately 100 to 200 people infected with brucellosis per year. NOAA is collaborating with public health officials to protect the health of people working with stranded dolphins. Cooking seafood kills the Brucella bacterium, and as there have been only three cases globally linking Brucella infection to consumption of raw seafood, there is minimal risk of exposure to humans through the consumption of seafood.

NOAA is reminding anyone who sees a stranded marine mammal to avoid touching it and to report the stranding to 1-877-WHALE HELP (1-877-942-5343).

The infection afflicting the dolphins is not the first such event that scientists suspect is tied to last year's oil spill.

Over the winter, anglers began pulling in red snapper that didn't look right.

The fish had dark lesions on their skin. Many had fins rotting away, and discolored or even striped skin. Inside, they had enlarged livers, gallbladders and bile ducts.

Jim Cowan, an oceanographer at Louisiana State University who examined them, said in April, "There's no doubt it's associated with a chronic exposure to a toxin."

What is brucellosis?

Brucellosis is an infectious disease caused by the bacteria of the genus Brucella. These bacteria are primarily passed among animals, and they cause disease in many different vertebrates. Various Brucella species affect sheep, goats, cattle, deer, elk, pigs, dogs, and several other animals. Humans become infected by coming in contact with animals or animal products that are contaminated with these bacteria. In humans brucellosis can cause a range of symptoms that are similar to the flu and may include fever, sweats, headaches, back pains, and physical weakness. Severe infections of the central nervous systems or lining of the heart may occur. Brucellosis can also cause long-lasting or chronic symptoms that include recurrent fevers, joint pain, and fatigue.

How common is brucellosis?

Brucellosis is not very common in the United States, where100 to 200 cases occur each year. But brucellosis can be very common in countries where animal disease control programs have not reduced the amount of disease among animals.

How is brucellosis transmitted to humans, and who is likely to become infected?

Humans are generally infected in one of three ways: eating or drinking something that is contaminated with Brucella, breathing in the organism (inhalation), or having the bacteria enter the body through skin wounds...

Can brucellosis be spread from person to person?

Direct person-to-person spread of brucellosis is extremely rare. Mothers who are breast-feeding may transmit the infection to their infants. Sexual transmission has also been reported. For both sexual and breast-feeding transmission, if the infant or person at risk is treated for brucellosis, their risk of becoming infected will probably be eliminated within 3 days. Although uncommon, transmission may also occur via contaminated tissue transplantation.

My dog has been diagnosed with brucellosis. Is that a risk for me?

B. canis is the species of Brucella species that can infect dogs. This species has occasionally been transmitted to humans, but the vast majority of dog infections do not result in human illness. Although veterinarians exposed to blood of infected animals are at risk, pet owners are not considered to be at risk for infection. This is partly because it is unlikely that they will come in contact with blood, semen, or placenta of the dog. The bacteria may be cleared from the animal within a few days of treatment; however re-infection is common and some animal body fluids may be infectious for weeks. Immunocompromised persons (cancer patients, HIV-infected individuals, or transplantation patients) should not handle dogs known to be infected with B. canis.

How is brucellosis diagnosed?

Brucellosis is diagnosed in a laboratory by finding Brucella organisms in samples of blood or bone marrow. Also, blood tests can be done to detect antibodies against the bacteria. If this method is used, two blood samples should be collected 2 weeks apart.

Is there a treatment for brucellosis?

Yes, but treatment can be difficult. Doctors can prescribe effective antibiotics. Usually, doxycycline and rifampin are used in combination for 6 weeks to prevent reoccuring infection. Depending on the timing of treatment and severity of illness, recovery may take a few weeks to several months. Mortality is low (<2%), and is usually associated with endocarditis.
