Brazil reports first case of avian flu in farm bird

Brazilian authorities Tuesday confirmed the detection of the first case of the highly pathogenic avian influenza virus (HPAI - H5N1) in a poultry bird in the municipality of Serra, in the State of Espírito Santo, but insisted commercial production remains safe. The South American country is the world's largest chicken exporter, with US$ 9.762 billion collected in 2022.
Depending on the epidemiological scenario, the Ministry of Agriculture and the Institute of Agricultural and Forestry Defense (IDAF) of Espírito Santo may adopt new measures to prevent the spread of the virus and protect the national poultry industry, it was explained.

The State Secretariat for Agriculture, Supply, Aquaculture and Fisheries (Seag) informs that the first positive outbreak for avian influenza (H5N1) in poultry (domestic) in Espírito Santo was confirmed. The disease was confirmed in a duck and a goose from a property located in the municipality of Serra - ES.
The Espírito Santo Agricultural and Forestry Defense Institute (Idaf/ES) is adopting measures to control and eradicate the virus in the outbreak, in addition to reinforcing clinical surveillance actions in the surrounding areas, within a radius of up to 10km. Depending on the evolution of investigations and the epidemiological scenario, new measures may be adopted.
It is important to emphasize that the occurrence of a focus on subsistence poultry does not bring restrictions to the international trade of Brazilian poultry products. Consumption and export of poultry products remain safe.
All suspicions of avian influenza in domestic or wild birds, including the identification of birds with respiratory or neurological signs or high and sudden mortality, must be notified immediately through e-Sisbravet, available on the Idaf website (www.idaf.es.gov .br). Direct contact, without adequate protection, with sick or dead birds must be avoided by the population.
