Brazil registers 2nd case of avian flu in farm animals
Currently, the country registers 64 outbreaks of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza H5N1 (IAAP) in different states

This Saturday (15), in an official communiqué, the Secretary of State for Agriculture and the Integrated Agricultural Development Company of Santa Catarina (Cidasc) confirmed an episode of avian flu in a domestic farm in the state.

This is the second case in Brazil. The first was identified on a property in the municipality of Serra, in Espírito Santo.

According to information from the Santa Catarina government, the case happened in Maracajá. Details were not disclosed.

The diagnosis was confirmed by the São Paulo Federal Agricultural Defense Laboratory, an international reference recognized by the World Organization for Animal Health (OMSA) in diagnosing this disease in birds.

On June 27, Santa Catarina had registered the first case of avian flu in a wild bird, in São Francisco do Sul.

Currently, the country registers 64 outbreaks of Highly Pathogenic H5N1 Avian Influenza (IAAP) in different states, including Espírito Santo, Bahia, Paraná, Rio de Janeiro, Rio Grande do Sul, Santa Catarina and São Paulo.

It is important to emphasize that there is no record of the disease in commercial production.

According to the government of Santa Catarina, the occurrence of HPAI in poultry does not compromise the sanitary condition of the state of Santa Catarina, which maintains its classification as free of HPAI in commercial production.

Therefore, exports of poultry products should not be affected by this notification.

The government points out that strict sanitary measures are being applied to contain and eradicate the outbreak of the disease, and there is also an intensification of surveillance actions in domestic bird populations in the region.
