Mato Grosso do Sul records first outbreak of avian influenza in subsistence birds

Total in Brazil rises to 103, but the country remains disease-free because no commercial production was affected

The Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (Mapa) confirmed this Monday (18) the detection of the highly pathogenic avian influenza virus (IAAP - H5N1) in a subsistence poultry farm in the city of Bonito, Mato Grosso do Sul. This is the first outbreak of the disease recorded in the state, and the third in subsistence birds detected in Brazil.

Sanitary measures are being applied by the Official Veterinary Service to contain and eradicate the outbreak, as well as surveillance actions on domestic bird populations in the region. There are no industrial poultry establishments in the epidemiological risk areas around the outbreak.

The total number of confirmed outbreaks in Brazil rises to 103, 100 of which are in wild birds and 03 in subsistence birds. The new focus is not included in the first update of the BI Panel , but will be included later today. On the platform provided by Mapa, it is possible to consult the number of outbreaks, locations and species affected by the virus.

The occurrence of a confirmed HPAI outbreak in subsistence birds does not impose restrictions on international trade in Brazilian poultry products. The consumption and export of poultry products remains safe.

Mapa continues to warn the population not to collect birds they find sick or dead and to contact the nearest veterinary service to prevent the disease from spreading.

There are no changes in Brazil's status as free from avian influenza before the World Organization for Animal Health (WHO), as there is no record of the disease in commercial production.
