EPIDEMIOLOGICAL COMMENTS
The BSE case was detected in the framework of the National Programme of Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy Surveillance, which is part of a Neurological Syndrome Surveillance System, and establishes that susceptible cattle aged above 24 months presenting neurological clinical signs which tested negative to rabies (endemic in the country) shall be tested for BSE. According to the national protocol, the sample, after resulting negative for rabies on February, 13, was submitted to ELISA testing for BSE at the National Laboratory of the state of Pernambuco (LFDA/PE), which detected BSE antigen and then submitted to immunohistochemistry test, with positive results on February, 22. Aiming at BSE typing , samples were sent to the WOAH reference laboratory, in Lethbridge, Alberta, Canada, with typing results still pending. The animal was killed and the carcass was completed disposed of in the farm, so meat and other products did not enter the food chain, thus not representing any risk to human or ruminant populations.

AFFECTED POPULATION DESCRIPTION
A 9-year-old bull presenting neurological clinical signs since 18/01/2023 was examined by an Official Veterinarian on 19/01/2023, in the framework of Neurological Syndrome Surveillance System (sampling of susceptible livestock presenting neurological clinical signs). The animal was euthanized for sampling collection and diagnostic laboratory for rabies and BSE at the national reference laboratory, which performed the screening and confirmatory tests (ELISA and IHC). Typing as classical (C) or atypical BSE (H or L) is still pending, as the sample was sent to WB testing in a WOAH reference laboratory in Lethbridge, Alberta, Canada.
