Released this Friday (3/3), the new Fiocruz InfoGripe Bulletin points to an increase in cases of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SRAG) due to Covid-19. The data show a very clear recent growth of the disease in the state of São Paulo. In Amazonas, this signal has been present for a longer time. In addition, some states are already beginning to show an increase in the elderly population. Regarding Epidemiological Week (SE) 8, period from February 19 to 25, the analysis is based on data entered in the Influenza Epidemiological Surveillance Information System (Sivep-Flu) up to February 27.

Given this scenario, InfoGripe coordinator Marcelo Gomes reinforces that adherence to the vaccination campaign, which began this week, is essential. To face this moment more safely, it is essential that the entire population is up to date with its vaccination, according to the recommended doses for each age group. Gomes points out that, in the case of priority groups, reinforcement in this phase of the resumption of Covid-19 can prevent the situation observed from generating an impact in terms of serious cases, hospitalizations and deaths. On the other hand, the researcher points out that this increase may also reach other age groups in the coming weeks. "The signal that starts in the elderly population is a reflection that the virus may be gaining strength again, thus increasing its transmission".

The study also shows the maintenance of an expressive growth of SARS among children and adolescents in states of different regions of the country. Laboratory data still do not allow for a clear statement of the infectious agent behind the increase in age. Among adults, an interruption in the drop in cases is observed, with some federative units already showing sustained growth in recent weeks.

In the last four epidemiological weeks, the prevalence among cases with a positive result for respiratory viruses was 2.4% for influenza A; 2.7% for influenza B; 26.6% for respiratory syncytial virus (RSV); and 52.1% for Sars-CoV-2. Among the deaths, the presence of these same viruses among the positives was 3.2% for influenza A; 1.6% for influenza B; 2.4% for VSR; and 92.1% for Sars-CoV-2.

Use of Masks

A study evaluated the impact of face protection masks on the transmission of Covid-19 in the national population. According to Gomes, a meta-analysis (combination of results from different studies) was carried out to understand how masks are used in different contexts. "It's a purely physical question: good masks, which adjust well to our face and have adequate air filtration, are a barrier to the passage of the virus", explains the researcher. "Using good masks, a healthy individual is not exposed to the absorption of viruses that are in the environment".

The researcher reinforces that physical tests already prove the effectiveness of the barrier offered, but that the adoption of masks without adequate protection capacity (such as cloth or surgical ones) can lead to exposure to the virus. "To be used for a long time, the surgical ones are not ideal, thus reducing the protection potential", he says. “It is necessary for the authorities to communicate with the population efficiently so that everyone knows which masks to use and how to use them correctly. Just demanding through laws is not enough. The population needs to be properly informed so that health regulations have the expected collective impact”.

Mato Grosso do Sul, Pará, Piauí, Paraná, Rio de Janeiro, Roraima, Santa Catarina and São Paulo. In Amazonas and São Paulo, there is an increase in practically all age groups analyzed. In the AM, the growth of Covid-19 is allied to the simultaneous increase of influenza A (flu), although to a lesser extent. In São Paulo, on the other hand, there is an increase of Covid-19 in the adult population, while the picture among children and adolescents is still not possible to identify the specific cause from the laboratory data entered in the notification system so far.

In Alagoas, Bahia, Ceará, Distrito Federal, Goiás, Mato Grosso do Sul, Piauí, Paraná, Rio de Janeiro and Santa Catarina, the increase in SARS cases is concentrated in children and adolescents. As in São Paulo, laboratory data do not allow identifying the cause associated with this increase.

In Ceará and Rio de Janeiro, there is also an increase in the population aged 80 and over, possibly associated with Covid-19. In Amapá, Pará and Roraima, the observed signal is still compatible with a scenario of oscillation in a period of low volume of cases, although the increase in Amazonas serves as a warning for the states in the same region.

Capitals

Eighteen of the 27 capitals show signs of growth in the long-term trend up to the same period: Aracaju (SE), Belém (PA), Boa Vista (RR), Campo Grande (MS), Cuiabá (MT), Curitiba (PR), Florianópolis (SC), Fortaleza (CE), Goiânia (GO), Macapá (AP), Maceió (AL), Manau
