Brazil identified in patients infected with two types of AIDS virus

A Brazilian study in Brazil identified carriers of acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS) infected with both HIV-1 and HIV-2, the two different viruses that transmit the disease.

Infection with both viruses, hitherto unknown in Brazil, is a major challenge for therapies used to treat the disease, which usually fight one or the other virus, the government reported Wednesday Oswaldo Cruz Foundation (Fiocruz), responsible for study.

HIV-1, the most widespread, is responsible for the vast majority of AIDS cases worldwide, while HIV-2 is epidemic and endemic in some West African countries like Guinea Bissau, Gambia, Costa d'Ivoire and Senegal.

According to statistics from the World Health Organization (WHO) for 2008, while about 34 million people worldwide had developed AIDS from HIV-1 transmission, that number barely reached 2 million among HIV-infected 2.

The study confirms that one patient developed AIDS from the two viruses was presented last month at the Second Congress of Infectious Diseases of the State of Rio de Janeiro, where he was recognized as one of the best papers presented at the event.

Researchers at the Laboratory of Molecular Genetics of Microorganisms of the Fiocruz confirmed the presence of both virus infection in 15 blood samples from different Brazilian states.

"We have been developing this work for several years and finally managed to reach a fairly robust," said the head of the Laboratory, Ana Carolina Vicente, who explained that the study, funded by the United Nations Programme on AIDS, initially intended to monitor the presence of HIV-2 in Brazil.

The researchers analyzed blood samples sent to laboratories around the country and which had initially been detected for the presence of the two viruses.

The results were confirmed by specific tests for each virus.

In addition to warning of a presence of HIV-2 in Brazil much higher than had been feared, the investigation led to a debate on the need to develop new treatments, because HIV-2 is more resistant to antiretroviral drugs used to treat HIV -1. (Xinhua)
