You mean when the ship hits the iceberg and sinks right? Anyone have a spare lifeboat?
I'm not that great with analogies :).

More Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever in Brazil. Remember this is the State that they said they were going to watch out for hemorrhagic pneumonia spreading there. Well, as would be predicted, most of the hemorrhagic fever cases are in Fortaleza, further up the coast from the cluster of cases.

Dear KC,
Very good points, all of them. I strongly suspect that these are cases of HPAI H5N1. They fit perfectly with the presentations. The fact of the matter is that they can rule out as many cases as they want, but it has clearly arrived in Brazil from Africa, and will continue to become more and more widespread. At some point, someone will discover a million dead chickens, or a bunch of people in a neighboring country will test positive for bf, but you and I know that only when the iceberg pops above the waterline does anyone pay attention. It doesn't change the steady march of this virus whether or not people know it's there. And if we're not hearing about these cases until June when they had started back in March, it just means that there might be cases all over South America and we're not going to know about them for months either. There is for example a surge in deaths from Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever cases going on in these countries. If they're not testing for it, how will they know? I'm telling you, if we thought last year was bad, this year is already 10 times worse, and we're only halfway through. The return of birds from East Asia to Europe, Africa, the Middle East and the Americas this August will be very painful, I'm sure.

I would like to remind everyone that this is not a speculative forum. I realize that there is some therapeutic value to venting in this way. However, there is no indication, whatsoever, that there is any H5N1 human infection in Brazil.

As I said,
Without a confirmation or identification of the underlying etiology, these "cases of hemorrhagic pneumonia of unknown etiology" are still "cases of hemorrhagic pneumonia of unknown etiology".
If we (and I mean us... "humans") don't know what the etiology is.... say it is unknown. It is OK to say we don't know what caused the deaths and illness in Brazil.

There are lots of unknowns out there; They focus people to continue to research for an answer.

When someone puts an "unknown" up as a "correct" answer (whether intentional or unintentional) and it is not peer reviewed or able to meet factual or clinical standards, it can irrevocably stifle the direction of future research and how we, as a human species, deal with continued viral and bacteriological threats in the future.

"cases of hemorrhagic pneumonia of unknown etiology" are still "cases of hemorrhagic pneumonia of unknown etiology"... until clinically or factually proven otherwise....
