The Health Minister Jose Gomes said on Friday that in 2010 have been recorded 361 hospitalizations due to influenza A (H1N1), known as swine flu, in Brazilian territory. Hospitalizations occurred since the 1st of January until April 3. During the period, there was a total of 50 deaths, while women represent 76% of them pregnant women and 32%.

The swine flu began circulating in the country in late May of last year. In all, 2009 had 2051 deaths, 75% of people with chronic diseases. The adults of 20 to 29 years concentrated 20% of deaths, and 30-39 years represented the largest share of deaths, 22% of the total.

On Friday Tempor?o took stock of vaccination against swine flu and launched a campaign to vaccinate the elderly against the flu, which begins this Saturday (8th), after adjournment, in the Southeast, Midwest and Northeast. Until May 21, as in other years the recommendation is that all people over 60 years are immunized.

In the North and South vaccination began on April 24 and ends this weekend. In both cases, elderly patients with chronic diseases will also be immunized against swine flu - get the dose against common flu in one arm and against swine flu in the other.

Balance

Altogether, 47.5 million people received flu vaccine in Brazil, which, according to government figures, 81% of the target initially convened.

Among the priority groups, however, vaccination has problems. The government's goal is that 80% of these groups are vaccinated, but among women the rate is 63%, and in adults 20-29 years in 69%.

Tempor?o attributed the low uptake of possible fear of pregnant women in relation to the vaccine. "There was a lot of noise early in the campaign, running on the Internet saying that the vaccine was bad, but nothing that is true."

The minister said that all health professionals and children under two years were vaccinated. Coverage in chronic patients, including elderly, is at 82% and Indians at 75%.

On Monday (10), will start the fifth stage, designed for people 30-39 years of age. Are an estimated 30 million people in this age group.

Children between six months and two years have yet to take a second dose of vaccine, which should occur 30 days after the first. This interval is the time needed for the body produce more antibodies, or guarantee greater immunity against disease.
