The three birds identified in Espírito Santo with avian flu this Monday (15) were weakened and had already died when the result of the test that identified that they had the H5N1 virus came out.


The manager of the Espírito Santo Agricultural and Forestry Defense Institute (IDAF), Raoni Cipriano, explained when and how the birds were identified.

The first was found lying on the 7th of May on a beach in Marataizes, in the south of the state. By coincidence, the person who identified the weakened thirty-reis-flock was a veterinarian from Idaf himself, who took care to collect the bird safely.


The second bird, also a thirty-reis-flock, was found lying on the 8th under a tree in the Fazendinha park, in Jardim Camburi, which is just over 2 km from the beach, where the birds usually stay. It was collected by technicians from the Caiman Institute who work in the park.

​The two were taken to the Institute for Research and Rehabilitation of Marine Animals (Ipram), in Cariacica. And there, they infected a third bird, a Brown Booby that had been recovering from a leg problem since January.


The three birds died days later, on May 10, according to the Idaf manager. One of them died from the disease and the other two were so debilitated that they had to be euthanized.


Idaf was notified of the suspicion by the Ipram veterinarian on the 10th. Soon after, the investigation and collection of samples was carried out to identify the H5N1 virus - which was confirmed this Monday (15th) -, according to actions foreseen in the surveillance plan for avian influenza.


The samples were processed at the Federal Agricultural Defense Laboratory of São Paulo (LFDA/SP), recognized by the World Organization for Animal Health (OMSA), since 2016, as an international reference in the diagnosis of avian influenza.


"This quick and effective action by Idaf allowed the detection and confirmation of the results in a short period of time, accelerating the response and intensifying the prevention measures, already routinely developed in ES", informed the agency.


The two places where the birds passed, both Fazendinha and Ipram are isolated. At Ipram there are another 30 birds, but since then they have not shown symptoms.

With regard to public health, the scenario is one of alert and monitoring. It is important to emphasize that the transmission occurs through contact with sick birds, living or dead. According to what has been observed in the world, the virus does not easily infect humans and, when it does, person-to-person transmission is generally not sustained.
The Ministry of Health reinforced, through a technical note, the guidelines for surveillance in cases of avian influenza in humans after the MAPA alert of the first confirmed cases of Avian Influenza in wild birds. In the declaration of a zoosanitary emergency for 180 days, MAPA continues to warn the population not to collect sick or dead birds and call the local veterinary service .
How health surveillance for Avian Influenza works
As soon as Mapa is notified of a probable case of the disease in birds by the official veterinary service, epidemiological surveillance actions in the region are immediately initiated locally by the municipal and state health departments, coordinated by the Ministry of Health. In addition to epidemiological surveillance coordination, the Centers for Strategic Information on Health Surveillance (CIEVS) present in all states actively search for the identification and monitoring of people who had contact with the birds, to ensure that they are tested, monitored and isolated, in case they develop flu-like symptoms.
The collected samples are analyzed by the Central Public Health Laboratory and then sent for confirmation of the result by reference laboratories and Fiocruz.
Health monitoring situation for Avian Influenza in humans in Brazil (data up to 05/23)
In all, 42 people who had contact with sick birds in Espírito Santo and Rio de Janeiro were monitored and had collective samples taken by local health teams and the Ministry of Health. Of this total, 38 have already had a confirmed negative result for H5N1 and another four samples are under analysis.
In Espírito Santo, the negative results include 33 samples from employees of Parque Fazendinha, where one of the birds was found, and another from an employee of the Institute for Research and Rehabilitation of Marine Animals (IPRAM). Another four exams of residents of the north of Rio de Janeiro were negative.
