Bahia registers another death from meningitis type C

State Health Secretariat of Bahia has one more death from meningococcal meningitis type C, considered one of the most dangerous forms of the disease. The new victim is a teenager of 16 years. According to the secretary, the young man died as 21h of last Monday, the Hospital Couto Maia, Salvador.

According to the Secretariat, the teenager had his first visit to the General Hospital Complex at about 19h on Monday. Doctors detected the suspected meningitis and sent the youth to the Hospital Couto Maia, Salvador. He died shortly after being admitted at the health institution.

Cases
According to the State Health Department of Bahia until the 24th of October, there have been 157 cases of meningococcal type C in the entire state. Of these, 41 died.
In total, the state has recorded 1115 cases of meningitis of all types. Of these, 118 died.

The State Health Department said the number of cases of meningitis this year are within normal limits. During 2008, there have been 1279 cases of all types of meningitis and 123 deaths.

Prevention
There are measures that can be taken to prevent the disease. According to the State Department of Health, it is important to keep the environment always well-ventilated and sunny, that because the bacterium that causes disease does not stand up to sunlight.

Another recommendation of the Secretariat is to vaccinate children with BCG and Octavalent, which prevents meningitis and tuberculous meningitis haemophilus B, respectively. These vaccines are available free of charge in public health.
