ZIKA / MICROCEPHALY
[h=1]Study with US will be in 60 municipalities of Paraiba[/h]
The research, which aims to investigate the association between the Zika virus and microcephaly, is being held in conjunction with the State Government, Ministry of Health and CDC
It began this week the Study of Fieldwork Case microcephaly control related to the Zika virus in Brazil. The research is being conducted through a partnership between the Ministry of Health, Government of Paraiba and Central Control and Communicable Disease Prevention (CDC) of the United States. In all, 60 counties in the state will be visited by researchers, who aim to get more robust information on the relationship of the Zika virus with microcephaly. Among the municipalities are Jo?o Pessoa, Campina Grande, Patos and their metropolitan areas.
For nearly two months, eight teams - composed by the institutions involved - investigate the proportion of infants born with microcephaly associated with Zika, and the risk of virus infection. They will be interviewed approximately 170 children born with microcephaly since October 2015. For each of them will be investigated in two to three children from the same region, not born with microcephaly.
"It is also part of this study to investigate people who were not affected by the disease (microcephaly). From the comparison of these cases is that we can estimate the risk, the relationship between the Zika virus and microcephaly, "said the Epidemiological Surveillance technical consultant of the National Program for Control of Ministry of Health Dengue, Priscila Leite, who is coordinating the work of teams in Paraiba.
For CDC epidemiologist Erin Staples, research leader in Paraiba, the study may bring new perspectives to the current scenario. "What we want to do is define the association of children diagnosed with microcephaly and if they had evidence of congenital infection Zika virus. Moreover, it is important to understand whether other infectious agents may be related to these cases, "said Erin Staples.
In the study, mothers are being interviewed by teams of researchers and the information will be registered with the use of tablets. The questionnaire consists of questions related to the mother's pregnancy, possible signs and symptoms she had during the period, as well as questions related to child birth.
In addition, blood samples will be taken from those mothers and babies who will be examined by the American laboratory. The goal is to identify whether there are other infectious agents in addition to the Zika virus that may be related to cases of microcephaly.
MICROCEPHALY - According to the data of the last Tell Epidemiologic of microcephaly, published Aug. 23, Paraiba is the second state with the highest number of suspected cases of microcephaly in the country. In all, 790 cases were reported, which confirmed 59, 291 and 440 disposed under investigation.
In Brazil, 4,107 suspected cases of microcephaly are under investigation by the Ministry of Health and the states.Since the start of the investigation - on 22 October 2015 until 20 February - were 5,640 notifications, with 950 already discarded.
In total, 583 notifications were confirmed to microcephaly and other nervous system disorders, suggestive of congenital infection in 235 municipalities of 16 Brazilian states (Alagoas, Bahia, Cear?, Maranh?o, Rond?nia, Esp?rito Santo, Goi?s, Mato Grosso do Sul, Par?, Para?ba, Pernambuco, Piau?, Rio Grande do Norte, Goi?s, Rio de Janeiro and Rio Grande do Sul). Of these, 67 have had laboratory confirmation to the Zika virus.
COOPERATION - Since 2012, the Ministry of Health has partnered with the CDC for cooperation in health issues. This study is another activity of this cooperation involving the two countries. The CDC participates in a study of Guillain Barr? in Bahia, and are collaborating with the laboratory area studies of Pernambuco Fiocruz on the relationship of the Zika virus and microcephaly.
