The government of Rio Grande do Sul confirmed, this Sunday (11), the detection of an outbreak of highly pathogenic avian influenza (H5N1) in two wild birds located in a dam in Rio Pardo, in Vale do Rio Pardo. This is the first confirmation of bird flu in the State in 2024.
The virus was identified in two birds of the caraúna species (Plegadis chihi, known as curlew). A sample had been sent on February 8 to the Federal Agricultural Defense Laboratory of Campinas, a reference unit of the World Organization for Animal Health....
Report confirms avian influenza in wild bird found in Rio Pardo
Confirmation does not change the health status of the State and country and a five-kilometer radius will be monitored
Publication: 02/11/2024 at 6:54 pm - BY CASSIANE OSÓRIO/SEAPI
The Secretariat of Agriculture, Livestock, Sustainable Production and Irrigation (Seapi), confirmed, this Sunday (11/2), the detection of an outbreak of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (H5N1) in two wild birds located in a reservoir, in the municipality from Rio Pardo. The virus was identified in the caraúna species (Plegadis chihi, “maçarico”). The notification does not affect the health status of the State and the country, nor does it impact trade in poultry products. There is also no risk in consuming meat and eggs, because the disease is not transmitted through consumption.
The Official Veterinary Service (SVO-RS) responded to the notification, and the sample was sent on February 8 to the Federal Agricultural Defense Laboratory of Campinas (LFDA-SP), a reference unit of the World Organization for Animal Health (OMSA). This is the sixth outbreak of avian influenza in Rio Grande do Sul, recorded in wild birds and aquatic mammals (sea lions and sea lions).
According to the director of the Department of Animal Health Surveillance and Defense (DDA), Rosane Collares, a technical meeting with the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (Mapa) and the Superintendency of Agriculture and Livestock of the State of RS (SFA/RS) was held this Sunday (11/2), to level the information and define the action strategy from today onwards.
“Teams from the Department of Agriculture will act in active surveillance, initially monitoring a radius of five kilometers from the outbreak, in order to prevent a possible spread of the disease and provide guidance to breeders to maintain biosecurity precautions on their properties, especially avoiding circulation of birds and, as far as possible, preventing coexistence environments between wild and domestic birds”, highlights Rosane.
Case notification
Avian influenza, also known as bird flu, is a highly contagious viral disease that mainly affects birds, but can also infect mammals, dogs, cats, other animals and humans.
All suspicions of avian influenza, which include respiratory, neurological signs or high and sudden mortality in animals, must be reported immediately to Seapi through the municipality's Agricultural Defense Inspectorate, Whatsapp (51) 98445-2033 or email notifica@agricultura.rs.gov.br.
Recommendations for subsistence poultry producers and breeders:
Reinforcement of preventive measures in poultry establishments.
Check the screens, bird cages, gates and ridges of the sheds.
Protect fountains, water tanks and feed silos from contact with free-ranging birds.
Disinfection of vehicles at entry and exit (pay attention to the correct dilution, as recommended in the leaflet).
Change clothes and shoes to enter the production unit.
Do not allow people outside the production process to enter the farms.
Poultry farms with access to paddocks or yards: it is recommended that birds be enclosed in sheds or chicken coops and drinking fountains and feeders protected to avoid contact with free-ranging birds.
Immediately notify the Agricultural Defense Inspectorate (IDA) in the event of high mortality (greater than or equal to 10% in 72 hours) or the identification of birds with respiratory, neurological or digestive signs.
Guidelines for the population
Do not handle or collect dead or dying birds.
Purchase birds only from duly authorized farms.
Immediately notify the Official Veterinary Service of the occurrence of birds with respiratory, neurological, digestive signs or high mortality, including in wild birds.

Agriculture confirms 1 more case of avian flu in wild birds in the country
04/22/2024 2:09 pm Brasília, 22 - The Ministry of Agriculture informed, in an update on the official platform, that a new outbreak of highly pathogenic avian influenza (IAAP, H5N1 virus) in wild birds was detected in Brazil. The new case was detected in a bird of the northern tern species in Guarapari (ES). In total, there are 160 cases of the disease in wild animals in the country (156 in wild birds and 4 in sea lions) and 3 outbreaks in subsistence production, domestic creation, totaling 163 in total.
According to the ministry, there are three other investigations in progress, with sample collection and without conclusive laboratory results. Notifications in wild and/or subsistence birds do not compromise Brazil's status as an IAAP-free country and do not bring restrictions on trade international market for Brazilian poultry products, as predicted by the World Organization for Animal Health (WHO).
