Brazil recorded almost 160 thousand cases of dengue between January and February 2023. An increase of 46% compared to the same period in 2022. In Rio de Janeiro, there were almost two thousand cases in two months.

Espírito Santo is experiencing an epidemic, with more than 29,000 records. Nine people have died from the disease this year, according to the Health Secretariat. In Minas Gerais there were six deaths. And nearly 7,000 cases have already been confirmed. And in Rondônia, there were more than a thousand confirmed patients in January alone, 40% more than in all of 2022.

Student Mariana Cortez felt the first symptoms shortly before Carnival. The disease progressed quickly. Shortly after, she was hospitalized with dengue hemorrhagic fever.

On March 2, Anvisa approved the registration of a new vaccine against dengue. But there is still no scheduled date for distributing the vaccine to the population. The only way to avoid the disease, for now, is still prevention.

Brazil: Resurgence of dengue serotype 3 raises alarm of risk of new epidemic
by Press Release
May 24, 2023

The recent resurgence of serotype 3 of the dengue virus in Brazil – which has not caused epidemics in the country for over 15 years – has raised the alarm about the risk of a new epidemic of the disease caused by this virus serotype. A study by Fiocruz, coordinated by Fiocruz Amazônia and the Oswaldo Cruz Institute (IOC/Fiocruz), presents the genetic characterization of the viruses referring to four cases of the infection recorded this year, in Roraima, in the North Region, and in Paraná, in the South of the country. The circulation of a long-absent serotype worries specialists...

Campinas (SP) surpassed the mark of 10 thousand cases of dengue in 2023, in what is already the 6th largest epidemic of the disease in the historical series recorded by the City Hall since 1998. Two people died. The Northwest and Southwest regions are those with the highest number of infected people.

In a statement, the Department of Health reported that it is "attentive to dengue indicators and is constantly working to combat the disease, including visiting properties to remove possible breeding sites and applying insecticide when identifying outbreaks of the transmitting mosquito."

According to the ministry, data from the last four weeks indicate a drop in the number of notifications, but the "appeal for the population to contribute permanently to preventive measures" remains - check out some measures that can be taken below.

In April, the municipality declared a dengue epidemic. Two people died - the first death occurred on March 4, and the second death was recorded in June.

According to the city hall, the most worrying regions continue to be the Northwest and Southwest, where the incidence of cases per 100,000 inhabitants has the highest rates...

New epidemiological bulletin on dengue indicates stable situation in Itajaí
Cases of the disease have been decreasing in the last 13 weeks
Inclusion date: 20/11/2023 13:43

The number of confirmed dengue cases continues to decline, according to the new Itajaí epidemiological bulletin. The report, released by the Itajaí Health Department, through the Epidemiological Surveillance Directorate (DVE) and Zoonosis Control Management, points out that the decrease in cases has occurred in the last 13 weeks, which keeps the disease situation stable in the municipality. The data analyzed is from the period from January 1st to November 11th, 2023.

To date, 12,932 suspected cases of dengue have been reported in Itajaí. Of these, 4,443 (34%) were confirmed, 7,032 (54%) were discarded, 629 (5%) are under investigation and 828 (6%) are residents of other municipalities.

Of the total confirmed cases, 4,377 are indigenous (transmission within the municipality), 16 are imported (transmission outside the municipality) and 50 are undetermined (it was not possible to determine the likely location of infection).

Reduction of cases

From epidemiological week number 25, in June, confirmed cases of dengue in Itajaí began to decrease. With this scenario continuing, the municipality left the epidemic situation on July 16th and once again reached endemic levels of the disease.

"It is essential that the population redoubles attention during the hottest and rainiest seasons, as these are periods when the Aedes aegypti mosquito proliferates easily. Constant awareness and the implementation of preventive practices are essential to keep the city protected against dengue ", reinforces the coordinator of the Dengue Control Program in Itajaí, Lúcio Vieira.

The epidemiological bulletin from the Itajaí Epidemiological Surveillance Directorate (DVE) uses information on suspected cases reported by health units in the Notifiable Diseases Information System (SINAN). The full report is available at this link.

Três Lagoas records 4,600 cases of dengue
Mato Grosso do Sul has 40,176 confirmed cases of the disease
By JPNews Editorial

In recent days, Mato Grosso do Sul has faced above-average temperatures that, in addition to causing health risks, also impact cases of viral diseases transmitted by the Aedes aegypti mosquito. Arboviruses such as dengue proliferate more easily in warmer periods, and therefore require increased attention.

According to the Dengue Epidemiological Bulletin, released by the State Department of Health (SES), the state currently has 40,176 confirmed cases of the disease in 2023. The rate represents approximately double the cases registered in the previous year, which totaled 21,328 people infected with January to December. In addition, 40 deaths from dengue were recorded this year.

Among the 79 municipalities in Mato Grosso do Sul, 74 of them are classified as having a high incidence of probable cases, according to the IBGE (Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics). Ribas do Rio Pardo, Terenos, Paranaíba and Tacuru have a medium incidence, while only Aparecida do Taboado has a low incidence.

Campo Grande leads the list with the highest number of confirmed cases of the disease, with 11,801, followed by Três Lagoas (4,613) and Corumbá (2,202). Although the capital has high numbers of contamination, it has a low incidence per number of inhabitants. The municipality of Alcinópolis is responsible for the highest incidence of confirmations in the state, with 9,036.8...

December 1, 2023
December 1, 2023. Dengue DENV-3 derotype detected in Sao Paulo, Brazil

After more than a decade, São Paulo, Brazil, is facing the resurgence of the DENV-3 serotype of the Dengue virus. Votuporanga, a town in the interior of São Paulo, has confirmed four cases of dengue due to this variant, which has not caused epidemics in Brazil for 15 years. The cases, identified in women, including a 5-year-old girl, were confirmed by the 'Adolfo Lutz' Institute.

This resurgence puts health authorities on alert due to the new circulation of this serotype in the country, with a high risk of epidemic, given that the population has low immunity against this specific serotype. The last time DENV-3 was identified in the region was in 2008.

The situation is aggravated considering that the DENV-3 serotype, along with DENV-2, are known for their greater virulence. Although any serotype of Dengue virus can cause mild infections to severe or fatal cases, studies suggest that DENV-2 and DENV-3 are of particular concern. In the first half of the year, FIOCRUZ had already warned about the resurgence of DENV-3 in Brazil, which increases fear of a new epidemic.

Dengue cases grow 21% in Brazil, according to Ministry of Health
Published by: Larissa Freitas on 11/30/2023 at 18:17

The number of dengue cases in Brazil increased by 21% compared to last year. From January 1st to November 18th, there were 1,663,113 confirmations of the disease compared to 1,374,776 in the same period in 2022, according to the Ministry of Health's epidemiological bulletin.

In the same period, 1,034 people died – 3.5% more compared to 2022, when there were 999 deaths from dengue.

In the state of São Paulo, according to the Department of Health, until November 24 of this year, 311,863 thousand cases of dengue fever were confirmed distributed in 625 municipalities, with 276 deaths.

In the same period of 2022, there were 327,341 confirmations of the disease, in 617 municipalities, with 284 deaths...

Dengue is a febrile disease transmitted by the bite of the female Aedes aegypti mosquito.

...Experts warn of the risk of an epidemic in 2024 caused by serotype 3, which returned to circulate in the country in 2023. On November 22, the Health Department of Votuporanga (521 km from São Paulo) confirmed four cases of dengue fever of this serotype. .

In May this year, a study by Fiocruz had identified three cases of serotype 3 in Roraima and one in Paraná. The analyzes indicated that the detected lineage was introduced to the Americas from Asia, in the period between 2018 and 2020, probably through the Caribbean.

According to the Ministry of Health, this year there is a predominance of types 1 and 2.

Dengue has four serotypes. When an individual is infected by one of them they acquire immunity against that virus, but are still susceptible to the others.

Dengue cases in Brazil increase 15.8% in 2023
Occurrences rose from 1.3 million in 2022 to 1.6 million this year

Published on 12/08/2023 - 11:28 By Paula Laboissière* - Reporter at Agência Brasil - Brasília
Updated on 12/08/2023 - 17:18

Dengue cases in Brazil increased by 15.8% in 2023 compared to last year, according to data released this Friday (8) by the Ministry of Health. The occurrences rose from 1.3 million in 2022 to 1.6 million this year year. The fatality rate was 0.07% in both years, totaling 1,053 confirmed deaths in 2023 and 999 last year.

“Factors such as climate variation, increased rainfall, the number of people susceptible to diseases and the change in the circulation of virus serotypes are factors that may have contributed to this growth”, assessed the ministry in a note. The states with the highest incidence of dengue are Espírito Santo, Minas Gerais, Santa Catarina, Paraná, Mato Grosso do Sul, Distrito Federal and Goiás.

Chikungunya

Regarding chikungunya, until December 2023, 145.3 thousand cases of the disease were reported in the country, with an incidence rate of 71.6 cases per 100 thousand inhabitants. Compared to the same period in 2022, when 264.3 thousand cases were reported (123.9 cases per 100 thousand inhabitants), the reduction was 45%. This year, 100 deaths caused by the disease were confirmed. The highest incidences are in Minas Gerais, Tocantins and Espírito Santo.
Zika

Zika data was collected by the department until the end of April 2023. In total, 7,275 thousand cases of the disease were reported, with an incidence rate of 3.6 cases per 100 thousand inhabitants. There was an increase of 1% compared to the same period in 2022, when 7,218 thousand occurrences of the disease were reported. To date, there are no records of deaths from Zika.
Breeding places

The Aedes aegypti Infestation Index Rapid Survey (LIRAa) and the Sample Index Survey (LIA) indicate that, in 2023, 74.8% of dengue mosquito breeding sites are in homes, such as in plant pots and dishes, returnable bottles, drip pans, defrosting containers in refrigerators, drinking fountains in general, small ornamental fountains and materials in construction warehouses (stocked toilets, pipes).

The numbers also show that elevated water storage deposits (water tanks, drums, masonry deposits) and at ground level (barrel, drum, barrel, cisterns, well, cacimba, cistern) appear as the second largest breeding site of mosquitoes, with 22%, while tire and garbage dumps have 3.2%.

The research is carried out by sampling properties and breeding sites with water positive for Aedes aegypti larvae at the municipal level. The states consolidate the data from the municipalities and forward them to the ministry....

Brazil breaks record for dengue deaths in 2023
In the historical series released by the ministry, also based on Sinan, the highest number of deaths in the period of a full year occurred in 2022
Brazil Agency
12/28/2023 07:51

Brazil broke a record for deaths from dengue in 2023. Data released by the Ministry of Health, through the Notifiable Diseases Information System (Sinan online), reveals that there were 1,079 deaths from the disease as of this Wednesday (27) .

In the historical series released by the ministry, also based on Sinan, the highest number of deaths in the period of a full year occurred in 2022, when it reached 1,053 records. Then comes 2015, with 986 deaths.

Asked about the record, the Ministry of Health reported that, with the forecast increase in cases, around 11,700 health professionals were trained in 2023 for clinical management, surveillance and control of arboviruses, which are infections caused by viruses transmitted mainly by mosquitoes.

“The Ministry of Health will invest R$256 million in strengthening arbovirus surveillance. The time is now to intensify efforts and prevention measures by everyone to reduce the transmission of diseases. To avoid the worsening of cases, the population should seek the nearest health service when they present the first symptoms”, says the note.

Also according to the folder, on the 21st, the dengue vaccine was incorporated into the Unified Health System (SUS). However, it will not be used on a large scale at first, as the manufacturing laboratory, Takeda, stated that it has a restricted capacity to supply doses. Vaccination will be focused on the public and priority regions, with the definition of strategies for using available doses scheduled to take place in the first weeks of January.
