Note: During an internal verification process at the laboratory, an incompatibility was identified between the sequence of samples tested and the data entry in the laboratory information management system (LIMS). This led to the incorrect attribution of positive results to the three penguins that were included in outbreaks OB_123409 and OB_123410 of follow-up report 12 (report ID 162225). These outbreaks were deleted in the follow-up report 18.

Barra Velha, on the North Coast, confirmed last week the first case of bird flu in the municipality. The diagnosis, made by CIDASC (Companhia Integrada de Desenvolvimento Agrícolas de SC), was recorded in a wild bird, known as a banded tern.

According to the city hall, the infected animal was found in the Itajuba neighborhood and captured by residents of the region. Following the existing protocol for the situation, the bird was sacrificed by CIDASC veterinarian, Simone Senger.

In total, eight people were monitored for 10 days after reporting contact with the animal on October 4th. No member of the monitored group showed signs of the disease and everyone has now been released from monitoring.

Agriculture confirms two more cases of avian flu in wild birds; total rises to 137

10/30/2023 - 11:26 am
ESTADÃO CONTEÚDO Isadora Duarte

The Ministry of Agriculture informed, in an update on the official platform at 8:30 am this Monday, the 30th, that two new outbreaks of highly pathogenic avian influenza (IAAP, H5N1 virus) in wild birds were detected in Brazil. In total, there are 134 cases of the disease in wild animals in the country (131 in wild birds and three in sea lions) and three outbreaks in subsistence production, domestic farming, totaling 137 in total.

According to the ministry, there are another 16 investigations underway, with sample collection and no conclusive laboratory results.

Of the cases investigated, six are in subsistence production, with three being analyzed in Rio Grande do Sul, one in Mato Grosso, one in Rondônia and one in Amazonas.

Notifications on wild and/or subsistence birds do not compromise Brazil's status as an IAAP-free country and do not impose restrictions on international trade in Brazilian poultry products, as provided for by the World Organization for Animal Health (WHO).
