At the moment, the city of São Paulo is facing an outbreak of meningitis, located between Vila Formosa and Aricanduva – a region in the east. To date, 5 cases of meningococcal meningitis type C have been confirmed, including the death of a 42-year-old woman. Details about her condition were not released.

The prefecture officially confirmed the meningitis outbreak last Monday (26), according to the TV Brazil. The current number of cases and the fact that they are concentrated in a single region of the capital of SP characterizes an outbreak, according to health authorities. By definition, an outbreak occurs when three or more cases occur in the same group within three months.

In addition to the 42-year-old patient, who died, four other cases were confirmed, between July 16 and September 15, in people of the following ages:

2 month old baby;
20 years old;
21 years old;
61 years old.

It is worth remembering that meningitis is an inflammation of the meninges – the membranes that surround the brain and spinal cord – and can be caused by infections of various microorganisms, such as fungi, viruses and bacteria. In the specific case of meningitis C, the cause is the bacteria neisseria meningitidiswhich can be fatal...

Rio de Janeiro says meningitis cases on the rise
Saturday, October 1st 2022 - 10:08 UTC

Health authorities in the Brazilian State of Rio de Janeiro have announced the number of cases of meningitis recorded so far in 2022 already exceeds those detected all throughout 2021.

According to the Rio de Janeiro State Health Secretariat (SES), there is no outbreak of the disease.

Meningitis is an inflammation of the meninges, the membranes that surround the brain and spinal cord. The microorganisms that cause it can be viruses, bacteria, fungi, and other agents. Viral meningitis is the most common and is less severe. On the other hand, meningococcal disease is caused by different types of bacteria called meningococci, which can cause more severe meningitis or even meningococcemia, the generalized infection caused by meningococcus.

The SES reported Thursday that between January and August 2022, the number of cases of meningococcal disease in the state increased 55.5% when compared to the same period in 2021. Throughout 2021, 30 cases of meningococcal disease were reported, with eight patients dying. In 2022, until August, there are already 28 notifications of the disease and seven deaths.

If all cases of meningitis are considered, the 977 recorded so far in the state already exceed the 959 counted throughout the year 2021...

Increase in deaths from meningococcal meningitis in Brazil; understand the disease
Amanda Serrano* – State of Minas

Meningitis returned to circulate in several Brazilian states. The “outbreak” of the infection, as said by the infectious disease specialist at Hospital Vila da Serra, Galvão Melo, raises concern, as it is the disease in one of its most serious forms, meningococcal meningitis, which can be prevented through vaccination.

According to the doctor, meningococcal meningitis is caused by a specific bacterium called meningococcus C. “It is transmitted from person to person, through droplets and secretions from the nose, mouth and throat. It also happens through contaminated food or water, but this form is less common.”

According to the Minas Gerais State Health Department (SES-MG), from January to September this year, 465 cases were recorded in the state and 71 people died from meningitis. The numbers are higher than 2021, as in the 12 months, there were a total of 459 cases and 51 deaths.

When there is no early diagnosis, this type of meningitis can lead to death in less than 24 hours and has a high mortality, so Galvão Melo reinforces the importance of sticking to the signs. “If not discovered and treated quickly, the infection can leave serious sequelae, such as loss of hearing, vision, cerebral palsy and, as said, death”, he reinforces...

With 617 cases of meningitis and 92 deaths confirmed in nine months, the disease scenario has turned on the warning sign in Minas Gerais.

The data are already higher than those recorded throughout last year, with an increase of 18% in positive diagnoses and 84% in the number of deaths. This is because, from January to December 2021, there were 522 confirmed cases, with 50 deaths from the disease.

Last Sunday, a death from type C meningitis was confirmed in the South of Minas, the third in the region in just over a month.

Despite the increase in the number of cases, so far, there is no outbreak of the disease in the state according to the coordinator of Communicable Diseases and Diseases of the Secretary of Health of Minas Gerais, Gilmar Coelho.

The main way to prevent the disease is through vaccination, available in the SUS, but which has shown low coverage.
