An outbreak of measles that has infected nearly 500 people in northern Brazil could prove catastrophic for indigenous Yanomami people in remote areas along the Venezuelan border who are not protected from the disease, according to the not-for-profit group Survival, which warned that hundreds could be killed if emergency action was not taken.

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL ? At least three Brazilian states have confirmed outbreaks of measles so far this year. The northern states of Amazonas and Roraima, together, account for about 500 confirmed cases and more than 1,500 cases are still being investigated.

In the other extreme of the country, Rio Grande do Sul in the south, also confirmed six cases of the disease this year, according to a government news agency yesterday (Wednesday, July 4th).

Rio de Janeiro is investigating seventeen cases ? one with a preliminary positive result for measles. This morning, July 5th, the Municipal Health Department of Rio de Janeiro ruled out the possibility of measles in four of the suspected cases that were being analyzed.

Superintendent of Health Surveillance, Cristina Lemos, has stated that only thirteen cases are still under analysis, including a young woman who has already had a preliminary positive result for the disease but is still awaiting confirmation from the Oswaldo Cruz Foundation (FIOCRUZ)...

Brazil confirms 677 cases of measles

Brazilian Ministry of Health on Wednesday confirmed 677 cases of measles in the country, saying the virus was brought in by immigrants from Venezuela.

Brazil currently has two outbreaks in the states of Amazonas and Roraima, both in the northern region, said the ministry.

A total of 444 measles cases have been confirmed in Amazonas, where there are another 2,529 suspected cases; in Roraima there are 216 confirmed cases and 160 to be verified. Another 17 confirmed cases are found in other states.

So far, there are three confirmed deaths of measles, two in Roraima and one in Amazonas. There is also one suspected case of death...

Measles cases increasing in Brazil despite the vaccination campaign

The Brazil Health Ministry website reported there have been 1,053 measles cases and 5 deaths, as of August 2, 2018. This negative news is a significant increase from the July 20th Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) report, which said Brazil had confirmed 677 measles cases during 2018.

Additionally, indigenous Brazilians living close to the Venezuelan borders are particularly vulnerable to measles outbreaks.

According to the PAHO update, 126 measles cases, including 53 deaths, were reported from the Yanomami communities in the municipality of Alto Orinoco, state of Amazonas, Venezuela, where there is currently an outbreak.

Moreover, the Oswaldo Cruz Institute, which carries out biological research and development in Brazil, samples were taken from measles patients in Roraima, the most common place to cross the border, are from the D8 genotype...

SAO PAULO (AP) ? Brazil's Health Ministry says more than 1,200 people have been infected in a growing measles outbreak linked to cases imported from neighboring Venezuela.

The ministry said Tuesday that six people have died.

The cases are concentrated in two states on Brazil's border with Venezuela. Health services have collapsed in the neighboring country amid economic and political turmoil, and Venezuelan officials have been dealing with a measles outbreak since last year.

More than 1 million people have fled Venezuela's chaos, often carrying disease with them...

The Brazil Ministry of Health reports 2,425 confirmed measles as of Oct. 22. Currently, Brazil is facing two outbreaks of measles: in Amazonas there are 2,000 confirmed cases and in Roraima with 332 confirmed cases of the disease.

The outbreaks are related to importation, as the genotype of the virus (D8) that is circulating in the country is the same that circulates in Venezuela, a country that has been facing an outbreak of the disease since 2017...

Brazil Confirmed 12 Deaths and over 10,000 Cases of Measles

Brasilia, Jan 11 (Prensa Latina) At least 12 people died and 10,274 are registered as confirmed cases of measles, from two outbreaks in the northern Brazilian states of Amazonas and Roraima.

The Ministry of Health reported these figures after receiving information from state secretariats about the situation of the disease from the beginning of 2018 until January 8.

According to the ministry, Brazil currently faces two outbreaks: in Amazonas (9,778 cases) and Roraima (355 cases).

Regarding the 12 deceased, four occurred in Roraima, six in Amazonas and two in the northern state of Para.

In addition, there is also a measles registry in eight other states (Rond?nia, Sao Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Rio Grande do Sul, Par?, Sergipe, Pernambuco and the Federal District)...
