Markey to Get Live Feed of BP Oil Spill on Website

BP Acquiesces to Markey?s Request, Will Release Video Stream Tonight to Chairman

May 19, 2010 ? Following a demand from Rep. Edward J. Markey (D-Mass.) for a live feed of the BP oil spill to be made publicly available on the web, BP said they would release the feed and it will be shown on Rep. Markey?s committee website at www.globalwarming.house.gov. The release of the live link to Rep. Markey is expected tonight.

?This may be BP?s footage, but it?s America?s ocean. Now anyone will be able to see the real-time effects the BP spill is having on our ocean,? said Rep. Markey, who conducted a briefing today with independent scientists where he reiterated the call for a video feed. ?This footage will aid analysis by independent scientists blocked by BP from coming to see the spill.?

Markey sent letters earlier today to BP America?s CEO Lamar McKay asking for the footage to be made public on BP?s website. If BP could not host the footage, Rep. Markey offered to host it on his website free of charge.

?BP is going to have to pay for the cleanup of this spill and the long-term damage. Hosting this video on our website is the only freebie they?re going to get,? Rep. Markey said.

The letter sent to McKay today can be found here.

Rep. Markey has frequently queried BP for more information on the exact size of the spill and on their refusal to engage with outside scientists. Independent scientists have examined video, satellite photos and other aspects of the spill and determined that it may be much bigger than estimated. Today at a briefing Rep. Markey held in his Energy and Environment Subcommittee, independent scientists from Purdue University and Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution said that the estimate of a 5,000 barrel per day leak was an underestimation of the flow. The scientists said with more data, they could better calculate the flow of oil from the sea floor.

"This is 4th grade math. We know the numerator here?the couple thousand barrels a day BP is siphoning out of the sunken pipe. But we still don?t know the denominator," said Rep. Markey. "BP is capturing a fraction of the oil, but they don?t know what that fraction is. By releasing this video, we?ve taken the first step towards allowing better access to the information BP has about this spill."

(AP) WASHINGTON - A live video feed that shows the oil gushing from the blown-out well in the Gulf of Mexico is now available online.

The video shows a large plume of oil and gas still spewing next to the tube that?s carrying some of it to the surface.

Congressman Ed Markey of Massachusetts pushed BP PLC to make the video available to the public. It?s now posted on the Web site of the Select Committee on Energy Independent and Global Warming.

BP was leasing the rig Deepwater Horizon when it exploded and sank a month ago off Louisiana. The company has been trying ever since to stop the oil spewing from the well.

BP says a mile-long tube is capturing 210,000 gallons of oil a day, but some is still escaping. The company initially estimated 210,000 gallons was the total amount of the spill.

Oil Spill Video Feed Stirs the Web

As if any more proof were needed that the world is watching, the video feed crashed due to enormous Web traffic, so instead of a plume of oil, viewers are treated intermittently to a black screen.

However, clips of the live footage were captured and are now being showcased on various sites. For live video feeds, check out BP's homepage.

Or you can try the Select Committee on Global Warming's website.

Be patient: The video feeds are overwhelmed with traffic, so they are often slow or simply not available.

Markey: BP will kill live feed of oil spill

Rep. Ed Markey, D-Mass., has issued a statement on his Congressional website saying that BP will end the live video feed of the oil spill at the bottom of the Gulf of Mexico.

Rep. Ed Markey, D-Mass., chairman of the House Select Committee on Energy Independence and Global Warming and the Energy and Environment Subcommittee says in a statement on his website that BP will end its live video feed of the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico.

By J. Scott Applewhite, Associated Press

BP informed Markey's office that the live feed would end sometime Wednesday morning and would remain offline until after the attempt to seal the well is completed. Markey chairs the House Select Committee on Energy Independence and Global Warming and the Energy and Environment Subcommittee in the Energy and Commerce Committee.

Read USA TODAY's full coverage of the follow up to the oil spill here.

"It is outrageous that BP would kill the video feed for the top kill," Markey said in the statement. "This BP blackout will obscure a vital moment in this disaster."

The lawmaker added, "After more than a month of spewing oil into the Gulf of Mexico, BP is essentially saying to the American people the solution will not be televised."

BP backs down to public pressure: Agrees to live feed of top kill

Bowing to public outrage and a direct request from the Obama White House, BP has agreed to show video of the "top kill" designed to choke off the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico.

The company plans to try to execute the delicate top kill procedure as early as dawn Wednesday. It's the latest attempt to plug the devastating oil leak.

The "top kill" involves force-feeding heavy drilling mud and cement onto the leak.

The streaming video feed has the potential to set records for streaming video broadcasts. There should be enough time to set up the appropriate number of streaming servers and traffic load balancers to accommodate the anticipated loads.

The company said in a statement Tuesday that it will display the video.

The decision came after discussions with the federal official overseeing the spill response, Coast Guard Adm. Thad Allen, BP said.

"Throughout the extended top kill procedure - which may take up to two days to complete - very significant changes in the appearance of the flows at the seabed may be expected," BP said. "These will not provide a reliable indicator of the overall progress, or success or failure, of the top kill operation as a whole. BP will report on the progress of the operation as appropriate and on its outcome when complete."

A small victory for the American public.
