NEW ORLEANS (AP) -- The BP chairman's comment that the oil giant cares about "the small people" has received an icy reception from residents along the Gulf Coast.

BP Chairman Carl-Henric Svanberg told reporters in Washington on Wednesday: "I hear comments sometimes that large oil companies are greedy companies or don't care, but that is not the case with BP. We care about the small people."

The following statement has been issued by BP Chairman Carl-Henric Svanberg - 16 June

"I spoke clumsily this afternoon, and for that, I am very sorry. What I was trying to say - that BP understands how deeply this affects the lives of people who live along the Gulf and depend on it for their livelihood - will best be conveyed not by any words but by the work we do to put things right for the families and businesses who've been hurt. Like President Obama, I believe we made some good progress toward that goal today."

Power makes people feel taller

People who feel powerful tend to overestimate their own height, new research shows.

5:33PM GMT 24 Jan 2012

The US investigation into whether a physical experience accompanies being powerful was sparked after BP chairman Carl-Henric Svanberg outraged the victims of the 2010 oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico by referring to them as the "small people."

Professor Jack Goncalo, of Cornell University, New York, and Dr Michelle Duguid, of Washington University, St. Louis, decided to find out and published their findings in Psychological Science.

Prof Goncalo said: "Plenty of research has shown taller people are more likely to acquire power, make more money on average and are more likely to be promoted.

"But our research is the first to show the reverse may also be true. Power also makes people feel taller."
...
Two other experiments, similar in design, found similar results - that people who feel powerful overestimate their height...

So maybe Mr Svanberg really did feel taller than the people affected by the Gulf oil spill...
