Fresh FMD outbreak sends shockwaves

Reports of a fresh foot and mouth disease (FMD) outbreak at Kareng Extension in Ngamiland have sent shockwaves across the region.

A Department of Veterinary Services press release on Wednesday confirmed a case of FMD in the Kareng area.

The case was reportedly noticed on a beast during inspections on cattle from the Kareng area at the Maun Abattoir. The department soon resumed strict cattle movement restrictions in the areas south of the Setata cordon fence to curb the disease spread. "Movement of the cloven-hoofed animals out of, within and in to Kareng, Semboyo, Makakung, Bodibeng and Sehitwa extension areas has been suspended with immediate effect," read part of the press statement.

A farmer in the area, Keapoletswe Keapoletswe said the disease re-emergence has now made them lose hope."

New outbreak causes complete countrywide ban of movement of all cloven hoofed


A complete countrywide movement ban of all cloven-hoofed animals (cattle, sheep, goats, antelopes and pigs) and their derived fresh products has been instituted with immediate effect as a result of the suspected outbreak of the disease in the North.

All cattle slaughter facilities, including export abattoirs, have been closed with immediate effect.

The Director of Veterinary Services, Dr Philemon Motsu announced on Saturday that the Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) had broken out in the Matsiloje extension area. The disease has hit the Butale Syndicate cattle post; about 300 cattle have so far been reported showing mouth and feet lesions that are normally associated with the disease. ?Collection of samples for laboratory testing at the Botswana Vaccine Institute (BVI) is ongoing,? he said...

FMD outbreak in Ramokgwebana

The farming community has been hit by another Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) outbreak, Department of Veterinary Services has revealed.

Through a press release the department says signs of the disease have been reported at Ramokgwebana crush in Robelela Extension area in Veterinary Disease Control Zone 7. This area was last hit by a similar outbreak in 2007.

"Cases of sick cattle in three kraals near the border cordon fence along the Shashe-Ramokgwebana River in the Selebi-Phikwe veterinary district have been reported showing feet and oral lesions normally associated with the disease. Collection of samples for laboratory testing at the Botswana Vaccine Institute (BVI) has been done and testing is ongoing," the statement continued.

Ramokgwebana is along the same river with Matsiloje, known as Zone 6, an area that was hit by the same disease outbreak about a month ago...

Botswana to cull 21,000 cattle


GABORNE: Botswana's agriculture ministry plans to kill over 21,000 cattle to curb the spread of foot-and-mouth disease. Kobedi Segale, deputy director of the Department of Animal Health and Field Services of the ministry, said that the ministry has already briefed the residents in the affected areas of Matsiloje, in the northeastern part of the country, and they have assured co-operation. People who would lose their cattle will be compensated.
