Bloomington man's autopsy tests positive for swine flu, but ruling on cause of death not determined

A 37-year-old Bloomington man who died last week has tested positive for swine flu. However, authorities have yet to rule it as the cause of death.

Elidio Liserio was found dead in his home Aug. 26 and his body was sent to the Nueces County medical examiner's office for an autopsy, Victoria County Justice of the Peace Robert Whitaker said.

On Monday morning, the Nueces County medical examiner, Dr. Ray Fernandez, found that tissue samples from Liserio tested positive for swine flu.

"Dr. Fernandez has not yet ruled on the cause of death and in cases like this, medical examiners typically wait for the full toxicology report, which can take about six weeks," Whitaker said.

Whitaker added that Liserio was found by his family lying on the ground in his bedroom. Emergency medical services were called but were unable to resuscitate Liserio.

It is believed that Liserio was possibly living with several other people in a mobile home, including children who may be students in the Bloomington school district, Whitaker said. In Liserio's obituary, he is listed as being survived by a wife and son, both parents and several brothers and sisters.

Bloomington superintendent Brad Williams said the district had not been notified of any potential swine flu threat as of yet. The district follows federal guidelines concerning swine flu and have had no cases so far.

Attempts to reach Liserio's family were unsuccessful.
