Chloe Buckley: Her family doctor thought she had tonsillitis

Parts of Britain are in the grip of a swine flu epidemic today after the first healthy child died of the virus that is sweeping the country.
Chloe Buckley, six, died within 48 hours of complaining of a sore throat and just a day before her seventh birthday.
She was not given the anti-viral drug Tamiflu after her doctor apparently misdiagnosed her illness as tonsillitis.
It was also announced yesterday that Dr Michael Day, a 64-year-old GP who had been treating swine flu victims, had died after contracting the virus.
Both the little girl and the doctor are believed to have been perfectly healthy before succumbing to swine flu.
Three people with no previous health problems have now died of the illness out of a total of 17 deaths across Britain.
Last night experts were reassuring the public that swine flu is no more contagious than the normal seasonal flu.
And for most of those who catch it, the illness will be mild.
'The vast majority of people will recover quickly by taking paracetamol or ibuprofen, and drinking plenty of fluids,' said Dr Laurence Buckman, chairman of the BMA's GP committee.
'We must remember that every year there are deaths from complications of seasonal flu; this is unfortunately inevitable with any strain of influenza.'*
Chloe, from West Drayton, West London, became ill on Wednesday and died on Thursday night.
Dr Day, a GP from Dunstable, Bedfordshire, died on Saturday in the Luton and Dunstable Hospital.
He is also understood to have been healthy, although a post mortem is being carried out.

So young: Chloe's family home in West Drayton, London
'Doctors have always accepted that there are risks associated with their job, Dr Buckman said.*
'Obviously these are smaller than they used to be with the advent of modern medicine, but they can never be eliminated altogether.
'It is understandable that people will be worried when they hear that a GP has died but we urge them to follow the recommended advice and contact their family doctor, rather than physically going to the surgery if they have symptoms.
'While these individual deaths are tragedies for the families concerned, it is very important that members of the public do not panic.'

Does anyone know if these people were in close proximity to each other? Wondering if this may be a new strain entirely.

OK, what was the cause of the blood clot?

Re: A sore throat ... and 48 hours later Chloe was dead: Swine flu kills healthy girl aged six and a doctor

The first healthcare worker to die after contracting swine flu was not killed by the virus, Bedfordshire police said today.

Michael Day, 64, died at Luton and Dunstable hospital on Saturday. A post-mortem examination found that the GP from Bedfordshire died of natural causes, a police spokeswoman said. It means that only one person without underlying health problems has been confirmed to have died in the UK after contracting the H1N1 virus. No inquest will be held into Day's death. Sources said he died from a blood clot to the lungs. He also suffered from heart disease and high blood pressure, and had viral pneumonia.

A post-mortem examination on six-year-old Chloe Buckley, who died on Thursday at St Mary's hospital in Paddington, west London, is expected to take place this week and should establish whether she had underlying health problems. A council official described her last night as having been "perfectly healthy" a few days ago.

Earlier today, the health secretary, Andy Burnham, urged people to keep the threat posed by swine flu "in perspective" after the death of Chloe.

Burnham described her death as a tragedy but said many children had suffered from swine flu and gone on to make a full recovery.

"People do need to keep it in perspective ? lots of children have already had swine flu and have made a very quick recovery and, obviously, in the early stages we saw lots of school closures," he told GMTV.

"There have been lots of children already having the condition but making a very quick and full recovery. We do have to keep it in perspective."

The health secretary said Britain was at the "front of the queue" for vaccine supplies and would start to receive the first next month.

"We have made very good plans in this country for this eventuality ? for being in this situation," he said. "So as soon as stocks are made, the very first vaccines will come to this country."

The deaths of Chloe and Day took the number of people in the UK who have died after contracting swine flu to 17.

Chloe's parents, Michael and Jacinta, said in a statement released today that they were "satisfied that the medical care Chloe received at all times was appropriate" and criticised newspaper stories that suggested otherwise. Some reports said that she was misdiagnosed and not given anti-viral swine flu drugs when she first fell ill. "We are obviously very distressed at the loss of our fun-loving baby girl," her parents said. "Nothing can replace her in our lives and we would plead with you to allow us to deal with our loss in private and without further intrusion."

The government has ordered enough swine flu vaccine to cover the entire population, with half of the doses expected by the end of the year.

A list has been drawn up of people who will be given the vaccine first, including health workers and patients with conditions such as diabetes and asthma.

At a meeting last night at St Catherine's school in West Drayton, where Chloe was a pupil, Daphne May, whose granddaughter is also a pupil, said there had been an air of panic.

"People are very worried and upset. We should have been told something sooner," said the 62-year-old. "Chloe was a beautiful girl, very polite, very petite, but we had heard that she had heart problems."

Chris Spencer, director of education and children's services at Hillingdon borough council, confirmed the school would close early for the summer break.

"It's an exceptional set of circumstances," he said. "This is a little girl who, until a few days ago, in all our minds was a child that was perfectly healthy so everybody here is in a deep state of shock and, with just a few days to go until the end of term, we've decided it's in the best interests of all involved."

Professor Steve Field, the chair of the Royal College of General Practitioners, said: "It is extremely important to remember that swine flu is currently a relatively mild condition in the majority of cases. The Royal College of General Practitioners has been working with the government on robust flu pandemic plans for a number of years and we are confident that the systems we have in place will cope well with the current pandemic."

Dr Laurence Buckman, the chair of the British Medical Association's GPs committee, said: "While these individual deaths are tragedies for the families concerned, it is very important that members of the public do not panic, and continue to follow health advice about swine flu and managing it if they are infected."

Re: A sore throat ... and 48 hours later Chloe was dead: Swine flu kills healthy girl aged six and a doctor

It would appear this is a case of 'disinformation'. While partially true, it reaches a conclusion that is probably false. The doctor died of the flu and/or complications of the flu-a cytokine storm may have actually killed him. The girl died of the flu and was otherwise healthy. It then attempts to reassure parents that most children get sick then recover. Further assurances of an imminent vaccine are also meant to reassure people the government has everything under control. While I am absolutely certain the government is doing everything it can, I strongly doubt they have everything under control.

"and had viral pneumonia."

I see that as the other spinned news worldwide about "underlaying conditions".
He had viral pneumonia - in a country permeated by new flu - than we can doubt flu forced other illnesses exacerbate, at least.

Condolences to both.

Why there is not at place an mandatory usage of respirators/gloves for any doctor/paramedic, and whatsoever health operator at the field?
The man could be maybe spared with such measures.

To not mention the insistance of playing usual activities in an chimera strange and deadly, pandemic phase 6.

The systems must treat the suspect illnessed the same moment (until tamiflu works, with it), and that's everybody with a parvence of whatsoever related symptom.

This policy of waiting without drugs is no good, no matter where instaurated.

Seems that lawyers take a sleep about, maybe they don't understand this, or even didn't read the news.

I know there has been information posted to FT very recently about pulmonary embolism is flu patients, and I am tempted to open a discussion thread about this case once I have collected the right amount of information. I contend (as do others, I think) that while the fact that a death occurred cannot be hidden easily, the cause of death can be obfuscated. This may be the first example we have of someone who died, was found to have swine flu, and then the death being related to swine flu was essentially retracted.

Maybe I'm wrong, but weren't there a mass of cases in Mex., USA, ... worldwide, where people died and were reported have new flu, but cited they die because of their "underlaying conditions"?

Seems the continuation of the complete information semi-embargo saga.

Re: A sore throat ... and 48 hours later Chloe was dead: Swine flu kills healthy girl aged six and a doctor

This represents what amounts to a retraction. In the other cases where people who died from swine flu also had underlying conditions, I did not note anything where they later came back and said flu had nothing to do with it. The wording in this indicates that they have.

Re: Blood clot in lungs - repoortedly kills healthy girl aged six and a doctor

I don't think that The Independent story 'denied' swine flu as cause of british doctor death.

The post mortem examination described a blood clot into lung and other damages, with viral pneumonia.

Clearly, since the police is not a research facility, the conclusions are in charge of health officials.

The doctor died as many other in US, Canada, Mexico, Argentina and elsewhere but nothing suggest changes in clinical courses of severe cases.

I agree.

Re: Blood clot in lungs - reportedly kills health care worker, healthy girl aged six dies of swine flu

Gee, I thought pulmonary embolus was a natural cause of death...

Re: Blood clot in lungs - reportedly kills health care worker, healthy girl aged six dies of swine flu

Heart disease and high blood pressure are both risk factors for deep vein thrombosis and subsequent pulmonary embolism. If he indeed had both of these, it's quite possible that any illness inducing bed rest could have caused the blood clot on the lung. This being so, then the death would be swine flu related (in that it was swine flu that laid him up), but not caused by swine flu so much as triggered by it. I would imagine this is the distinction the Independent is trying to draw.

I think leaping from "blood clot on the lung" to "cytokine storm" is unfounded misinformation.

Re: Blood clot in lungs - reportedly kills health care worker, healthy girl aged six dies of swine flu

A death result because triggered by flu, or another because of direct flu harming,
must be located in the same directory of "flu related death victims" from the health system.

Other ways of statistic presentation represents an deminishing of the pandemic vawe seriousness, at the moment when it is very important to display it true, because of alarming and shielding the people, not leaving them as uninformed sheeple mingling on the field - the vast majority worldwide thinks this is ordinary flu, but it is not, and there is no vaccines, and soon no drugs.

We've already had a couple H1N1 deaths that had nothing to do with H1N1. One patient in China was accidentally electrocuted. A couple suspect patients have died due to trauma (including an Egyptian case imported from Israel who hit his head hard). I think this one might fall into that category.

We'll probably have a few dozen of these at least by the time this pandemic is over.
