Precautionary measures to prevent bird flu disease underscored

A three-day training workshop for the journalists of Rangpur and Nilphamari districts on "Bird Flu and Pandemic Flu Awareness and Preparedness" began in the auditorium of Rangpur Chamber of Commerce and Industry here today.

Press Institute of Bangladesh (PIB) is organised the training workshop with financial support from UNICEF with a view to create massive awareness and necessary preparedness for saving human lives and reduce loss in the poultry sector.

Chaired by Parveen Sultana Rabbi, the inaugural session was attended by renowned academic and former Principal of Rangpur Carmichael University College Professor Dr Muhammad Rezaul Haq as the chief guest.

Parveen Sultana Rabbi delivered the welcome speech while Rangpur district representative of UNICEF Rezina Sultana and Researcher of PIB Mohammad Amir Hossain also spoke on the occasion.

A total of 41 journalists from both print and electronic media of the two districts are participating in the workshop.

The speakers said Bangladesh is one of the most vulnerable countries because of its geographic, demographic and topographic locations as millions of migratory birds from the Siberian regions visit Bangladesh every year and use routes on their way to other south Asian countries, they mentioned.

They also suggested various means to keep our human lives and poultry birds safe through adopting necessary means, precautionary measures and preparedness.

Speakers at a workshop here on Tuesday said that the country's poultry sector as well as the people could be saved through preventing the spreading of bird flu and pandemic flu viruses by creating mass awareness.

They said this while addressing the concluding ceremony of a three-day training workshop for the journalists of Rangpur and Nilphamari districts on 'Bird Flu and Pandemic Flu Awareness and Preparedness' in the conference hall of Rangpur Circuit House.

Press Institute of Bangladesh (PIB) organised the training workshop with financial support from UNICEF with a view to creating massive awareness and necessary preparedness for saving human lives and reducing loss in the poultry sector if the viral diseases break out anytime in the future.

Chaired by Programme Communication Officer of UNICEF from Dhaka headquarters Ahsan Habib, the concluding session was attended by Deputy Commissioner of Rangpur Khondker Atiar Rahman as the chief guest, who distributed certificates among the 41 participant journalists.

Rajshahi Divisional Chief of UNICEF Nujulee Begum, Rangpur District Representative of UNICEF Rezina Sultana and Researcher of PIB Amir Hossain were present as special guests.

Trainer and coordinator of PIB Parveen Sultana Rabbi conducted the function that was also addressed by Staff Reporter of BSS Mamun Islam and Nilphamari Correspondent of The Daily Star Asaduzzaman on behalf of the participant journalists.

PIB training workshop on Bird Flu concludes in Barisal


A three days training workshop for journalists about reporting on 'Bird Flu and Pandemic Flu Awareness and Preparedness' has been ended in the auditorium of local government and engineering department(LGED) at Barisal on Thursday.

Forty journalists from print and electronic media of Barisal and Jhalakati districts participated in this training workshop organized by Press Institute of Bangladesh in collaboration with UNICEF.

Parvin Sultana Rabbi, trainer and Shamima Chowdhury, senior trainer of PIB conducted workshop.

Dr. Sunil Chandra Gayen, principal scientific officer of Barisal regional animal disease research center and laboratory, Dr. Md.Jubayer, medical officer of Narshingdi Sadar upazila health complex, Joynuddin Molla, district livestock officer, addressed as resource persons in the workshop.

Ashen Habib, UNICEF program communication officer, presided over, Manjure Elahi, deputy commissioner and Hemayet Hossain, executive engineer of LGED, were chief and special guest of the workshop ending ceremony.

Parvin Sultana Rabbi, PIB trainer,on behalf of the organizers, Mamunur Rashid Nomani, Dulal Saha,Liton Bashar and Nasimul Alam, on behalf of the participants, addressed and Shamima Chowdhury, senior trainer conducted the concluding session .

Local journalists of Barisal expressed their resentments about the aims and objects of the workshop except misusing training funds as most of the selected participants of the workshop have not sufficient qualification and also have no access to report on this issue.

The participants also called the organizers that concerned authorities must create and clearly define the real terms and terminologies about this issue which could be easily understandable to mass people before training the media people.

M A Halim, director training and administration of PIB, presided over the inauguration ceremony and Manjure Elahi, commissioner of Barisal, inaugurated the program, as chief guest on last Tuesday.

Ahsan Habib, UNICEF program communication officer and Prof.Shah Sajeda, were special guests of the inauguration ceremony.
