Bird flu warning signs at airport

Guernsey residents are being warned to take precautions when visiting countries which have avian flu.

The Guernsey Influenza Pandemic Project team has issued advice to minimise the risk of holidaymakers coming into contact with the H5N1 virus.

Signs are being put up for departing passengers at the airport and harbour to outline the latest advice.

Director of Public Health Dr David Jeffs said it was important for islanders to be aware of the risks.

The H5NI strain of the virus has been making its way across Europe, with cases in France confirmed.

Last month the States vet said keeping chicken and geese indoors would cut the risk of a spread from wild fowl to domestic birds in the Bailiwick.
