TABUK, Kalinga (31 March) -- The Provincial Avian Influenza Task Force has reached out to the barangays to educate people on bird flu.

The task force has conducted prevention campaign even if the country is bird flu free, and disseminated control measures to stop the spread of it in case the disease spreads on Philippine soil.

Dr. Mariano Dunwan, Provincial Veterinarian said the advocacy campaign on bird flu has managed to increase the awareness level of the people on bird flu prevention and how to deal with the problem in case it reached Philippines shores.

?The province has not experience yet the presence of bird flu, but its absence does not mean to do nothing,? he said. ?Our Asian neighbors were infected with the disease so we have to prevent it from entering our peninsula,? he added.

Dunwan said the only possible places where migratory birds could land are the swampy areas in Rizal and Tabuk. He said they have set up monitoring sites to monitor migratory birds seeking sanctuary in the province?s forest and plains. ?But so far, no monitored presence of migratory birds has ever recorded,? he stressed.

He said three provincial-wide seminars on bird flu prevention were conducted and two in the municipal level. Posters and other information material were also distributed to the barangays.

?Information dissemination in the barangays ride on through caravan with other agencies doing pulong-pulong,? Dunwan said.

He said the preparedness level of the public is assured with the organization of eight municipal bird flu task forces. ?Member stakeholders of the task force went on air and on print media to widen the exposure level of the public of bird flu,? he pointed out.

He said they have already finished the inventory of poultry in the province to make possible indemnification of bird flu signs to counter or mitigate its spread.

Five protective vest were given to their office for use in examining suspected cases. ?Touching birds afflicted with bird flu is dangerous to humans,? Dr. Dunwan explains.

To support the program, the provincial government has allotted an initial amount of P40,000.00 for the implementation of this year?s bird flu advocacy campaign.

Asked on the resistance level of Philippines fowls on bird flu, Dunwan said ?it has no distinction from other fowls in other countries.?

The problem, he said, is the lack of quarantine checkpoints to inspect and control the entry of chicken from other provinces. (pab/pia-kalinga)
