Red alert regarding bird flu in Kanpur Zoo; 62 workers tested on the lines of corona, 200 surveillance samples sent to IVRI Bareilly - KANPUR ZOO BIRD FLU ALERT

May 18, 2025 at 8:29 PM IST
Exerpt
Kanpur: Kanpur Zoo administration is on alert mode regarding bird flu. To assess the situation, serum sampling of 62 personnel was done on Sunday on the lines of corona. Apart from this, about 200 surveillance samples have been sent to IVRI Bareilly. Municipal corporation personnel did sanitization near the enclosures in the zoo. Many animals have died in the zoo within three days.

Administrative officers of Kanpur Zoo claimed that at present there is no information about any bird being found dead inside the zoo on Sunday. Precautions are being taken so that the outbreak of the virus does not increase too much. The zoo has been divided into 6 zones. At the same time, the hospital premises have been converted into an epic zone.

Many wild animals have reduced their food: The worrying thing for the administrative officers and doctors in Kanpur Zoo is that many wild animals have reduced their food since the death of Babbar Sher Pataudi. Zoo officers and doctors are considering it very serious. If such conditions continue in the coming days then it could be a matter of concern.

Samples sent to Bareilly: After the information of bird flu in Kanpur Zoo, many other departments including Animal Husbandry Department have also sent their personnel to the field. Different Animal Husbandry Department teams in the city and rural areas took a total of 200 surveillance samples. These were sent to the Indian Veterinary Research Institute, Bareilly for testing.

Surveillance for several kilometers around the zoo: Similarly, a total of 13 RRT teams have also been activated by the district administration. DM Kanpur Jitendra Pratap Singh has prepared 11 administrative teams under the chairmanship of 7 ACM officers. It includes Assistant Police Commissioner, Municipal Corporation and Animal Husbandry Department personnel. Teams of administrative officers are continuously monitoring within a radius of several kilometers around the zoo.

Sanitization was also done by adding medicines to the water solution. The food and enclosures of animals and birds were sanitized with blow torching. Apart from this, 6 quintals of lime was sprayed in the entire premises

The date of closing the zoo for tourists will be extended

The zoo is closed for tourists till May 19 due to bird flu. Looking at the infection report, the date of keeping the zoo closed for tourists will be extended.
