Bird flu found in three ducks in Cambodia

PHNOM PENH (AFX) - The H5N1 bird flu virus has been found in three ducks on a family farm in eastern Cambodia, triggering a cull of hundreds of birds, officials said.
The sick ducks were discovered during a routine check of poultry in Kompong Cham province on February 6, said Yim Voeunthan, secretary of state at the ministry of agriculture.
It was not known how the ducks contracted the virus, he said, adding that none of the farm's other 220 ducks were infected.
'We have culled all 223 ducks in the farm to avoid any outbreak of bird flu,' Yim Voeunthan said.
He said the presence of the virus had been confirmed by the Pasteur Institute in Phnom Penh. The farm had been disinfected and the movement of birds to and from the area banned, he said.
At least four people have died in Cambodia from the H5N1 strain of bird flu. No new outbreaks have been reported in animals or humans since March.
