ISLAMABAD, May 22 (KUNA) -- An outbreak of the deadly H5N1 strain of bird flu has been detected in at least four poultry farms here, sixth such case reported since beginning of the year.

The livestock ministry Dr. R. H. Usmani told newsmen that bird flu virus has occurred at four poultry farms in Chak Shahzad area and laboratory tests have confirmed the presence of the virus.

However, he said, the owners of the farms refused to let the officials cull the suspicious chicken, after which the "assistance" of district administration was sought.

He said that a nationwide survey was underway, but so far there has been no information regarding bird flu.

This was the sixth case of deadly bird flu detected in Pakistan and fifth in Islamabad. No human cases have been recorded

The owners of these farms had earlier refused to cooperate in the culling process but agreed after the livestock department?s assurance of compensation.

The commissioner livestock, Dr. R. H. Usmani informed the journalists about the entire issue, and said that it was however not a widespread virus, but our tests have confirmed the presence of bird flu here.

He said that a survey was underway, but so far there has been no information regarding bird flu. Still the vigilance has been enhanced, and has cautioned that if the farm owners continued to resist, help of the district administration would be sought, in order to contain the virus.

ISLAMABAD, May 23 (Reuters) - Pakistani authorities have discovered the deadly H5N1 strain of bird flu at three poultry farms on the outskirts of Islamabad and culled nearly 10,500 chickens, a government official said on Wednesday.

Pakistan first detected the H5N1 strain of the virus in early 2006 in North West Frontier Province and about 40,000 birds were culled. Several outbreaks have been found in chickens this year but Pakistan has had no human cases.

Samples were collected on Monday after about 2,500 birds died on the three farms last week. The samples tested positive for the H5N1 strain, said Food and Agriculture Ministry official Rafiq-ul-Hassan Usmani.

"We took action on Tuesday and killed the remaining birds on the three farms which had some 13,000 chickens before the virus struck," Usmani said.

Poultry has been culled on several small farms this year after the virus was found and authorities briefly shut Islamabad Zoo in February after four peacocks and a goose died of the H5N1 strain.

Usmani said authorities were investigating the new cases to see if the farm owners ignored instructions to vaccinate their birds.

"We are keeping a close watch and there is no cause of concern," he said.

The virus has killed more than 180 people, most of them in Southeast Asia, since it re-emerged in 2003. Experts fear it could mutate into a form that could jump easily between people and cause a pandemic.

No Bird Flu Virus Identified in Humans

ISLAMABAD: The blood tests of two suspects have been cleared of carrying Avian Influenza commonly known as bird flu. Both the men were employees of the poultry farms affected by Bird Flu virus in the area of Chak Shahzad Islamabad.

While talking to Online, Director General National Institute of Health Masood Anwar said that no Bird Flu Virus has been identified in human beings in any part of Pakistan however health Ministry keeps vigilant eye over the situation and wherever we get information of bird flu virus in birds and chicken we immediately get the blood of poultry workers for test.

The tests are conducted to control flow of bird flu virus in human beings.

ISLAMABAD, May 25 (Reuters) - Pakistani authorities have detected the H5N1 strain of bird flu at two more poultry farms on the outskirts of Islamabad, taking to five the number of outbreaks found this week, a government official said on Friday.

Several outbreaks of the H5N1 strain of bird flu have been found in poultry this year in Pakistan, where the deadly virus first appeared in early 2006. Pakistan has had no human cases.

"We have discovered two more cases in the same area where the virus was found in three poultry farms early this week," said Food and Agriculture Ministry official Rafiq-ul-Hassan Usmani.

Samples were gathered on Wednesday after the death of more than 3,000 birds on the two farms in the Chak Shezad area. The samples tested positive for the H5N1 strain and authorities culled the remaining 4,000 chickens on Thursday.

Usmani said authorities had stepped up surveillance in the area, which is known as "poultry pocket" because of its more than 40 commercial chicken farms.

"My hunch is that birds on many of these farms are not getting the vaccination, and the free movement of workers and birds within the area is also causing the spread," he said.

Health officials had been sent to examine farm workers, he said.

Poultry was culled on several small farms in early 2007 after detection of the virus and authorities briefly shut Islamabad Zoo in February after four peacocks and a goose died of H5N1.

The WHO says 186 people worldwide have died of bird flu since the H5N1 virus resurfaced in Southeast Asia in 2007. The virus has since spread throughout much of Asia, parts of Europe, the Middle East and Africa.

Indonesia has the highest number of confirmed human deaths from the virus, with 77.

</td> </tr> <tr> <td class="small_txt">PESHAWAR: The National Reference Laboratory for Poultry Diseases, Islamabad, has confirmed the presence of Avian Influenza H5N1 virus in the birds found dead in Peshawar, Naushera and Charsadda districts.

Well-informed sources in Veterinary Research Institute NWFP said the Islamabad lab confirmed presence of the virus in black Partridge and dead crows. The lab is also processing the serum samples from Desi layers it received.


The NWFP government, the sources said, is yet to take precautionary measures. They said the Directorate of Livestock and Dairy Development Department had received the report on February 28 from Islamabad but the department has not yet checked the poultry farms and quarantined them. The Islamabad lab had recommended culling of all birds in the premises and disinfecting farms as per standard protocol, the sources informed.

Islamabad : Pakistani authorities have intensified monitoring of over 800 poultry farms in the capital following an outbreak of bird flu in five poultry farms there, an official said Saturday.
The deadly H5N1 bird flu virus was detected in three farms May 22 and in two other farms the next day in Chak Shehzad, a suburb of Islamabad, state media reported, quoting Livestock Commissioner R.H Usmani.
Several thousand chickens were killed by the disease or culled later in these farms.
However, the official said there had been no case of human infection by the virus.
The affected poultry have been kept in quarantine to stop further spread of the virus, and livestock officials have started spraying disinfectants in an area of three km from where the bird flu virus was detected as precautionary measures, according to the report.
Besides, the poultry farm owners were asked to adopt measures to check the spread of bird flu, including using gloves and masks while working in the farms.

ISLAMABAD: Authorities here on Monday reported two new cases of the deadly H5N1 strain of bird flu in commercial poultry farms in Karachi and Abbotabad. Agriculture and Livestock Ministry spokesman Mohammad Afzal told AFP the virus was detected on Thursday and Friday. “We collected samples and conducted tests after some chickens were found dead at the two places,” he said. Some 600 chickens were slaughtered — 350 in Karachi and about 250 in Abbotabad — after the tests confirmed they were infected with H5N1 virus, he said. “The farms were small and isolated and there is nothing alarming,” he said.

Several poultry farms unwilling to cull birds

ISLAMABAD, May 26: A number of poultry farms operating in the twin cities of Rawalpindi and Islamabad have shown their unwillingness to cull their birds infected by avian influenza after facing long delays in getting the compensation money from the government, sources told Dawn on Saturday.

The government has to pay 75 per cent of the cost of production of the poultry, which are culled after the detection of bird flu in farms, to owners as compensation.

During the last outbreak of the flu, some of the farm owners had to cull their birds, many of them in hundreds, in collaboration with the government authorities to prevent the spread of avian flu. But the government was unable to pay them the compensation amount on time.

?Yes, there was a bit of delay in disbursement of compensation money last time. That?s why some of the poultry farms, where bird flu was detected on May 23, had created some problems, but we have settled everything with them now,? Dr Rafiqul Hassan Usmani, official spokesman of the Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Livestock (Minfal) on Bird Flu told Dawn.

Dr Usmani said the government had to pay the first instalment of compensation money to the affected farmers within two weeks and remaining within two months. But, last time the process took a bit longer due to delay in the disbursement of funds. That?s why, some farmers had created problems on May 23. However, now everything was well under control.

Since Wednesday, the authorities have culled some 18,500 bird flu-hit birds in five farms located in the poultry pockets of Rawalpindi and Islamabad after the detection of the disease there. There are more than 60 farms in different poultry pockets of Islamabad and Rawalpindi and only their full cooperation can stop the spread of the disease.

Sources in the Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Livestock (Minfal) said even some of the five farms in Chak Shahzad, in which bird flu had hit broilers, Desi chickens and peacocks on Tuesday and Friday, were unwilling to cooperate with the government.

They feared that the infected birds in some farms of Rawalpindi and Islamabad could make to the market and ultimately to the kitchens of the consumers.

They said during the last bird flu crisis in Pakistan, the poultry farms had reportedly faced over Rs10 billion losses and the government was unable to compensate them. Later, the association developed a strategy to deal with the issue by creating artificial decrease in the production of the poultry to increase prices and regain the lost money.

They said even now the authorities feared an artificial decrease in production by the association, which could increase chicken prices even amidst the news of the spread of bird flu.

They said without the timely and full cooperation of the farm owners, the government could not control the spread of the viral disease because they were the farmers who first took the samples of the birds which died unnatural deaths to laboratories and inform the bird flu monitoring teams on their own.

If the farm owners were not satisfied with the existing compensation mechanism then it was almost impossible for the government to detect and stop the diseases from spreading, they added.

When contacted, Animal Husbandry Commissioner Dr Mohammad Afzal said the farm owners in Chak Shahzad had themselves taken the samples of the dead birds to the Poultry Research Institutes (PRI) laboratory on Murree Road, Shamsabad, for initial tests.

The samples were later taken to the National Reference Laboratory (NRL) in the National Agricultural Research Council (NARC) for further tests.

In response to a question, he said all the five infected farms had been disinfected and now the movement of poultry in the area had been completely banned in the three kilometre radius.:tiphat:
