JAKARTA, Aug 2 (Reuters) - Three Indonesian children have been hospitalised with suspected bird flu in a North Sumatran district where seven members of an extended family died from the disease in May, officials said on Wednesday.

The three -- two siblings aged 10 and six and their 18-month-old neighbour -- were admitted to the state-run Adam Malik hospital on Tuesday after showing symptoms of bird flu, said hospital director Luhur Suroso.

"We are testing samples taken from them," Suroso told Reuters. He declined to give further details.

Hariadi Wibisono, the health ministry's director-general of control of animal-borne diseases, said the patients lived in Karo district in North Sumatra province where bird flu killed as many as seven people in an extended family in May.

The deaths in Karo were the biggest cluster of the disease the country has recorded and sparked fears of a global pandemic of bird flu infections in humans.

The World Health Organisation said in May that two members of the cluster, an Indonesian man and his son, might have caught the virus in a case of direct human-to-human transmission, but the virus did not spread very far if this did happen.

"They are from the same district but a different village," Wibisono said, referring to the three new suspected cases.

Indonesia has recorded 42 deaths from the H5N1 bird flu virus, equalling Vietnam, where no one is known to have died of the disease this year.

Human cases of bird flu have been rising steadily in Indonesia since its first known outbreak in poultry in late 2003.

Worldwide, the disease has killed at least 134 people since it re-emerged in east Asia in 2003.

Indonesia has been criticised for not doing enough to stamp out H5N1, which still remains essentially an animal disease but experts fear could spark a pandemic if it mutates into a form that can pass easily among people.

The government has so far shied away from mass culling of poultry, citing lack of funds and impracticality in a country with millions of backyard fowl.

Here's what I've got so far:

All 6 are related.

These 3 (all siblings? Dedek & Elvi definitely are) admitted to RSU Kabanjahe on Monday night, July 31. Transferred to RSUP Adam Malik in Medan on Tues (Aug 1) afternoon:

Moses Valentino Sitepu/Moses Perangin-angin [Mvs] (1.5)
Elvi Febrianti Sitepu/Evi Br Sitepu [Efs] (10)
Dedek Sitepu [Des] (6) - most sick according to paternal aunt Lina - Dedek has had a cough for a week - the other two just got fevers yesterday (July 31) - one of the docs said they've all had a fever since Saturday (July 29)

The condition of the 3 below is reportedly not as serious as the other 3. And, they are still in Kabanjahe Public Hospital, Karo?

Julham Sitepu [Js] (15)
Reni/Reni boru Tarigan [Ren] (32) - mother to Alpian - some of her chickens reportedly died of, as yet, unknown causes.
Alpian/Alvian Ginting [Alp] (10) - Reni's child

Is Ginting a common name, or is there a blood relationship with the earlier Karo cluster?

MEDAN, Indonesia Seven Indonesians from the same village on Sumatra are being treated for bird flu symptoms in what doctors and officials fear could be two new clusters of the virus.

The patients are believed to have been infected by chickens. Among those believed to be infected this time are two sisters, ages ten and six, and an 18-month-old boy from the house next door.

Blood tests still have to confirm H-Five-N-One virus infections.

Indonesia has recorded 42 deaths from bird flu over the past year, including seven members of one family in the same district as the latest suspected cases.

Indonesia is tied with Vietnam as the world's hardest-hit country.

Experts fear the virus will mutate into a form that spreads easily among people, potentially sparking a global pandemic.

(Kyodo) - Two siblings and their seven neighbors in a regency in Indonesia's North Sumatra Province are suspected of being infected with bird flu and are receiving treatment at hospitals, health officials said Wednesday.

An official at the Jakarta-based Bird Flu Coordinating Post told Kyodo News the siblings, aged 6 and 10, and their 18-month-old neighbor from the village of Sumbul in Karo Regency have been treated at the Adam Malik General Hospital in the provincial capital Medan since Tuesday.

"Six other neighbors aged between 10 and 32 are being treated at the Kabanjahe General Hospital in Karo," the official said, adding a team from the Health Ministry has been dispatched to the village.

The daily Kompas quoted Sumbul Sembiring, chief of the bird flu management team in the regency, as saying that before the new suspected cases were found 19 chickens had been found dead, probably because of bird flu.

In Karo, seven people from one family contracted the H5N1 strain of bird flu earlier this year. The seven family members -- six of them died -- were confirmed having contracted the virus in April and May. Another family member also died, but she was only suspected of being infected with the disease.

In June, the World Health Organization confirmed that human-to-human transmission of bird flu had occurred in the regency.

According to the WHO, the number of human bird flu cases in Indonesia is 54, including 42 deaths. The Health Ministry insists that human cases total 56, including 43 deaths.

The disease has killed at least 134 people around the world since December 2003, according to the WHO.

Human bird flu cluster fears in Sumatra
By Times Online and agencies

Seven Indonesians, including three children all from the same village in Sumatra are being treated for bird flu symptoms in what doctors fear could be two new clusters of the virus.

While blood tests are still to confirm H5N1strain infections, the patients are believed to have been infected by chickens in the Karo district which have died and tested positive for the virus.

The three children, two siblings aged 10, and six and their 18-month-old neighbour were admitted to the Adam Malik hospital in Medan on Tuesday after showing signs of the disease.

Medical officials have said that their condition is stable, and they are suffering from the usual fever, flu and cough associated with bird flu.

"Their lungs have not shown signs of pneumonia but we have to keep monitoring them because in one or two days things could change," Luhur Suroso, the hospital director said.

Seven members of the one extended family who lived in the same North Sumatran district as those involved in the new outbreak, died from bird flu in May.

This was the largest recorded cluster of the virus so far known.

At the time, the World Health Organisation said that two members of the cluster - an Indonesian man who cared for his ailing son, might have caught the virus in a case of direct human-to-human transmission, but that the virus did not spread very far if this did happen.

There have been 42 deaths from the H5N1 strain of bird flu in Indonesia since July 2005. The country has been criticised for not doing enough to prevent H5N1, with the government so far hesitating to launch into a mass cull of poultry.

Bayu Krisnamurthi, an official at the anti-bird flu task force said of this latest case: "If it is feasible as far as the procedure is concerned, we will start culling poultry in the area today."

With the recent outbreak, the World Health Organisation concluded that while limited human-to-human transmission probably had occurred - the scenario it is feared will lead to a human pandemic - the virus did not spread beyond blood family members.

Nyoman Kandun, an Indonesian Health Ministry official told Associated Press news agency: "In fact there are two clusters, one with two sisters, the other with three family members, and another two of their neighbours."

Bird flu clusters, or groupings of infections, are watched closely because they can help determine if the illness is changing or becoming more easily transferable between people.

Siti Fadilah Supari, the Health minister, Anton Apriyantono, the Agriculture minister and Aburizal Bakrie, the Welfare minister travelled to Karo today to assess the situation. Siti Fadila Supari said after meeting with hospital officials, that "their condition for the time being is good."

To date, 134 people have died from bird flu worldwide. The disease, which first began spreading in Asia in late 2003, is contracted mostly through contact with infected poultry.

Seven people from the same village have been hospitalised in Indonesia with suspected bird flu, officials say.

The group is from Karo district in Northern Sumatra province, where seven members of one family died of the deadly H5N1 virus in May.

Their deaths sparked fears that the virus was mutating into a form which could pass easily from human to human, but experts later ruled this out.

Indonesia has seen more bird flu deaths this year than any other country.

A health ministry official, Runizar Ruesin, said experts were still waiting for test results from the group and any cluster "must be scientifically proved".

But any new cluster of bird flu sufferers would cause alarm, especially since foreign health experts say Indonesia has not managed to control the disease's spread among birds.

May case
Experts fear that the virus could mutate to a form which could be easily passed from human to human, triggering a pandemic and potentially putting millions of lives at risk.

The World Health Organization said that limited human-to-human transmission had taken place in the case in May, but emphasised that this did not signal a major change in the spread of the disease.

Indonesia recorded its 42nd human bird flu death at the end of July, the same total as in Vietnam.

But while Vietnam has been praised for controlling the disease's spread among birds, Indonesia's government has been criticised for its reluctance to cull fowl in infected areas and for the fact that many Indonesians still do not understand the danger of living in close proximity to chickens and ducks.

Globally, more than 130 people have died of bird flu since late 2003. Most of the deaths have been in East Asia, but the virus has also spread to Europe, Africa and South and Central Asia.

Bird-Flu Outbreak Suspected in Northern Sumatra
By VOA News
02 August 2006

Indonesian health officials say seven people from a village in northern Sumatra are being treated for what doctors suspect may be bird flu.

The villagers come from the same district where bird flu killed seven members of an extended family in May.

Officials say the suspected new cases include two young siblings and a neighbor's baby. They have been admitted to a hospital in the city of Medan.

Local authorities are carrying out tests on the seven villagers to determine whether they have the dangerous H5N1 strain of the virus.

The previous cluster of bird flu deaths in northern Sumatra was the largest of its kind since the global outbreak began, and raised concerns about human-to-human transmission of the virus.

Indonesia has confirmed 42 deaths from bird flu, tying Vietnam for the world's highest number of fatalities.
