Hanoi - Vietnamese authorities have detected the H5N1 avian flu virus in a flock of ducks on a farm in the southern province of Ca Mau, a government official said Friday.
Hoang Van Nam, deputy director of Vietnam's Animal Health Department, said inspectors had found on September 22 that bird flu had killed more than 50 of 500 ducks on a Ca Mau farm.
All the ducks at the farm were ducklings under 45 days old, and had thus not been vaccinated yet, Nam said.
Authorities have culled all the ducks at the farm.
'Bird flu occurs occasionally in Vietnam,' Nam said. 'We cannot extinguish it, but only limit its spread.'
On September 7, the Animal Health Department announced it had detected bird flu in a flock of 600 ducks on a farm in the southern province of Ben Tre, adjacent to Ho Chi Minh City.
According to Nam, bird flu outbreaks have been detected in 26 Vietnamese provinces since the beginning of 2008, killing 5 people and forcing authorities to cull more than 60,000 ducks.
H5N1 mainly affects poultry and wild birds, but can infect humans who have close contact with sick fowl. Scientists fear that if it spreads unchecked, the disease could mutate into a form which could be transmitted between humans, leading to a worldwide pandemic that could kill millions.
Bird flu has infected 105 people in Vietnam and killed at least 51 of them since it first appeared in the country in late 2003.

The new cases were reported in poultry in southern Ca Mau province and central Nghe An province. No new cases of humans contraction have been detected so far, said Nguyen Huy Nga, Head of the Department for Preventive Medicine and Environment at a meeting in Hanoi on Wednesday.

"But due to the conducive weather conditions and the unpredictable development of the epidemic in poultry, there is a high risk of human case," warned the medical official.

So far this year, Vietnam has reported five human avian influenza fatalities. The most recent case of human infection was in March.

The Vietnamese Health Ministry is working with relevant government organizations and institutes nationwide to monitor the development of the disease, particularly in the affected localities and those with a history of epidemic outbreaks, said the report.

Bird flu found in poultry in northern Vietnam
Reuters
Published: December 28, 2008

HANOI: Bird flu has resurfaced in poultry in northern Vietnam after many months without any cases, killing ducks and chickens at two farms, a state-run newspaper reported on Sunday.

Animal health officials confirmed on Saturday the H5N1 virus had killed several birds among a flock of more than 100 ducks in Thai Nguyen city, 80 km (50 miles) north of Hanoi, the Ho Chi Minh City Communist Youth league-run Tuoi Tre newspaper said.

Officials had also detected the virus in dead chickens at a farm in the same city and nearly 4,200 chickens had been slaughtered to prevent the virus from spreading, the report said without giving a timeframe.

Deputy Health Minister Trinh Quan Huan said this week that there was a very high risk of bird flu returning during the winter and spring in northern Vietnam. The H5N1 strain seems to thrive best in low temperature.

Five Vietnamese have died of bird flu so far this year out of six reported H5N1 infections and all were found in northern Vietnam during the first quarter of the year.

The H5N1 strain has killed 247 people globally among the 391 confirmed cases of infection since 2003, according to the World Health Organisation.

Vietnam has 106 infections, the second highest number of cases among 15 countries with known human cases after Indonesia.

Bird flu 'hits Vietnam poultry farms'

HANOI (AFP) ? Bird flu has struck two poultry flocks in northern Vietnam, a newspaper reported Sunday, after authorities warned that the killer virus could resurface strongly in the cold and wet winter months.

The virulent H5N1 viral strain killed five people in Vietnam early this year, but no new human deaths have been reported since March.

Last week the virus struck again in Thai Nguyen city, 80 kilometres (50 miles) north of the capital Hanoi, where it was found in several dead ducks on one farm and in dead chicken on another, the Tuoi Tre daily said.

Veterinary authorities culled 100 ducks and more than 4,000 chicken, said the report quoting local animal health officials.

Northern Vietnam has in recent days been gripped by a cold snap that favours the spread of respiratory diseases because the virus survives longer in the cold and people spend more time close together inside their homes.

The Tet lunar New Year festival in January is also considered a high-risk time for the spread of bird flu because the slaughter, trade and consumption of poultry, and smuggling of birds from neighbouring China, rises sharply.

Vietnam's health ministry last week issued a nationwide bird flu alert, urging cities and provinces to step up detection and epidemic control measures.

Communist Vietnam, once the nation worst hit by the H5N1 virus, contained earlier outbreaks through mass poultry vaccination campaigns, the destruction of millions of birds and public education initiatives.

The World Health Organisation has since 2003 confirmed 391 human cases of bird flu, of which 247 people have died. In Vietnam 52 people have died, the second highest toll after Indonesia, where the virus has killed 113 people.

Bird flu mainly kills animals, but scientists fear it could mutate to jump easily from human to human, sparking a global pandemic.
