This global map displays current Bird Flu infected areas. It also provides a method for individuals and agencies to report on Avian Flu activity anywhere in the world. These reports will be immediately updated on the map.

Please note, this is vector map and it uses the Adobe Scaleable Vector Graphics plugin. This is available at the site for free download if required.

Re: Bird Flu Global Surveillance Map

Hi Snowy,
I'll be glad to help you get "plugged-in".

I guess should have also have said that users should be viewing with Internet Explorer 6, and have the "Run ActiveX Control and plug-ins" enabled under their:
Tools>Internet Options>Security>Custom>

Does this help?

Francis

Re: Bird Flu Global Surveillance Map

The symbols shown on this map, representing avian and human infections, have been improved. They now allow for a higher density display, along with detailed cluster reporting.

Re: Bird Flu Global Surveillance Map

Excellent Google Earth Timline...after viewing it...I'm guess we can expect an explosion of Bird Flu in Africa real soon.

Re: Bird Flu Global Surveillance Map

I am intrigued by all the blank spaces between the outbreaks.....

Re: Bird Flu Global Surveillance Map

We have activated the charts/graphs feature of this map. It shows both immediate data, along with historical monthly charts and their cumulative graphs for country H5N1 confirmed locations, plus H5N1 human infections and deaths.

Re: Bird Flu Global Surveillance Map

Hello,

We have added RSS feed for the most recent reports. This feature will provide a list of the 10 most recent reports of avian and human infections. To use this, just click on the lovely 'eye' and access the RSS capsule link.

Re: Bird Flu Global Surveillance Map

Hello,
We added a nice search feature to this map.
You can search on any timeline for any country, or by continent. The search results are presented both in a table and as symbols on a map. The result package is printable.

Francis

Re: Bird Flu Global Surveillance Map

Hi 4-ABBA,

Yes, this map works dandy in IE7: We closely monitored IE7 during its beta stages to assure it would be OK.

As to the map hanging...
I'll be the first to admit it does work better, at this time, with both a high-speed connection and, I guess, a fancy computer. (A low-bandwidth package is in the works)
The hanging probably happens on a first-time visit, during the loading stage when it is accessing new files, that have not yet been stored on your computer. Simultaneously it's using your computer to build the map, rather than downloading the map file, per se. This can be tough on some systems.

I think if you visit map again, it will have already cached(stored), because of your previous visit, many of the needed files on your computer. This will give your system a running start, and will load the map, hopefully:)

This is an important issue for us, so please let me know if it still doesn't happen.

Regards,
Francis

Re: Bird Flu Global Surveillance Map

Thank you Francis for allowing me to help nail this down. (I used to do tech support at Microsoft, so let me know if I can assist tracing this down further.)

I have a T1 connection, so download speed is not a factor. Also, I have a Toshiba 2 ghz processor speed, with 1 gb ram, so processing power is also not an issue.

The download progress bar gets about 70% across--and then it just stops. I let it attempt to continue downloading for about another 5 minutes, but no more progress.

I checked my active-x controls, and none of them are disabled.

Back to you, Francis!

Re: Bird Flu Global Surveillance Map

Gee, I thought you were challenged with a dial-up and AT-vintage hardware...sorry.

Well, your system does have wonderful horsepower. Wish I was there:)

I appreciate the opportunity to have the map run nicely on your system. I have a few thoughts at this time that I will investigate. This relates to both IE7 and/or the logic in the code whereby a speedy system can get ahead of expectations.

I'll contact you further on the email link herein to let you know of the progress to success.

Thanks much for your feedback,
Francis

Re: Bird Flu Global Surveillance Map

That is the same error message I am getting when I try to view. Pops up a box asking for a name and password. I was starting to think it was just me it didn't like!

Re: Bird Flu Global Surveillance Map

I do apologize for the map being offline. The server crashed on Sunday, and I was surely expecting it to be up by now. We're working on it. I'll post a message here when it is back online.
