Bird flu fears after swan deaths in Stratford-upon-Avon

Fears bird flu is rife among swans at a popular tourist town have been raised after several died recently.

Stratford-upon-Avon has an estimated 80 swans and it is believed 12 have died.

Cyril Bennis, who runs Stratford Swan Rescue, said the situation is the worst he has seen in 30 years.


The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) has not confirmed the presence of bird flu but said it carries out year-round avian influenza surveillance.


Swans on the river in the town have been reported exhibiting signs of the disease, which affects the nervous system and causes birds to lose co-ordination...

ABOUT half of Stratford’s swan population are estimated to have been killed by avian flu.

Cyril Bennis, of Stratford Swan Rescue, told the Herald on Thursday afternoon that about 40 swans had died.

“It’s nearly half,” he said. “It’s staggering and I’m not sure what’s going to come next.

“It’s so unpredictable. One minute they’re fine and the next minute they’re not.”...

Almost two weeks after the first birds died, Defra confirmed there is avian influenza A (H5N1) in wild bird populations in Stratford as well as across the border in Diglis Basin, Worcestershire.

A statement said that dead birds were collected from around the River Avon in Stratford town centre and sent to the Animal and Plant Health Agency’s lab for testing, which confirmed avian flu in the swan population.
