Bird Flu case found in Nepali capital

KATHMANDU, Nov. 29 ? A case of bird flu or the H5N1 virus has been found in the Nepali capital Kathmandu on Tuesday.
The bird flu was found in less than six months after the government of Nepal declared Nepal a bird flu free zone.
The virus was located in a squatters? area in Jadibuti at Kathmandu.
More than 500 ducks and chicken have been destroyed after the news of the disease.
The locals informed the District Livestock Service Office after all the chicken in a house died at once.
Talking to Xinhua, chief of District Livestock Service Office Bhaktapur Shiva Bahadur KC said, ?The dead chicken were taken for a laboratory test where it was proven that they had died of bird flu.?

KATHMANDU, NOV 30 -
A day after officials confirmed bird flu in Bhaktapur and quar antined the area, many locals in and around Madhyapur Thimi Municipality on Wednesday complained of symptoms similar to that of bird flu.
Sita Rai, a resident near the site of the outbreak, said she has sore throat, fever, cough and muscle ache.
However, two health officials at the site, who stayed for less than 20 minutes in the area, said she is fine and that there is nothing to worry about.
The officials, however, did not give much chance to Rai to explain her symptoms, this reporter witnessed. They checked her blood pressure and gave her a medicine for headache.
Government officials have claimed that humans have not been infected with the H5N1 virus. Janak Kumari Tamang also said she is having breathing problems since the past few days.
Director of the National Public Health Laboratory Dr Geeta Shakya said a careful surveillance is needed when it comes to human beings as the bird flu mortality rate among them is very high.

Poultry cull follows Kathmandu bird flu outbreak

KATHMANDU ? Nepalese health workers have culled hundreds of chickens and ducks following the first reported outbreak of bird flu in the capital Kathmandu, a government official said Thursday.
"Over 500 chickens and ducks have been slaughtered in the last three days. We also destroyed dozens of eggs and several kilos of poultry feed," government health official Narayan Prasad Ghimire told AFP.
Ghimire said a rapid response team was mobilised in the area on the outskirts of Kathmandu to prevent the virus spreading to other parts of the city.
The outbreak was discovered after a local poultry farmer told health officials that 90 of his chickens had suddenly died.
