Two persons die in Bihar floods, state-wide alert issued

Patna, Jul 6 (PTI) A woman and a child drowned in flood waters in Bihar's Gopalganj district today as a state-wide alert was issued with major rivers flowing above the danger mark. The two drowned while trying to move to safety from Fulwaria village which was engulfed by flood waters, officials said. With this, four persons have so far lost their lives in the floods in the state. Over 100 villages were affected by the floods in Sitamarhi, Muzaffarpur, Gopalganj districts, they said. Disaster Management officials said a 33-member National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) team was camping in Saharsa with four boats. ...

Patna : Over half a million people have been affected by floods in Bihar, with thousands forced to flee their homes, reviving fears of the 2008 devastation, officials said Wednesday.

The flooding has enveloped parts of West Champaran, Gopalganj, Saharsa, Muzaffarpur and Araria districts following heavy rains in the state and in the areas closer to Nepal.

Waters entered houses in more than 100 villages, forcing thousands to take shelter along highways and in school and other buildings, officials from the water resources and the disaster management told IANS.

"Floods have affected more than three lakh people," one official said.

Two die as flood situation worsens in Bihar

Alert was sounded after two persons died as the overall flood situation aggravated on Monday in Bihar's Gopalganj, Sitamarhi and Muzaffarpur districts with rivers maintaining rising trends.

?We have sounded alert across the state with aggravation of flood threat with heavy rains in the catchment areas of major rivers,? Bihar Water Resource Minister Vijay Kumar Choudhary told reporters.

Two youths drowned while crossing the swollen Budhi Gandak river at a place under Bachhbaria police station in West Champaran district, Choudhary said, adding the state government would provide a compensation of Rs. one lakh to bereaved families of each of the deceased.

Patna, July 8 (PTI) Two teenagers drowned in Bihar's Muzaffarpur district today taking the toll in the recent spell of floods to eight even as there was marked improvement in the overall situation in the state with major rivers receding along their course.Jasmin Khatun (13) and Md Iliyas (14) who had gone to graze cattle drowned in the swirling waters of turbulent Bagmati at Ramnagar in Muzaffarpur, officials said."There is marked improvement in the overall flood situation in the state in absence of rains since yesterday," an official said.A Central Water Commission report said Bagmati though flowing 62 cm above the red mark at Benibad was receding.Similarly, water level of Kosi flowing above the danger mark at Baltara was likely to come down by 16 cm, 05 cm and 15 cm at Basua, Baltara and Kursela. Gandak was flowing 96 cm down from the red mark at Revaghat and the river was likely to recede further, the report said.Burhi Gandak too was flowing 87 below the danger point at Khagaria and its water level was to decrease by 22 cm further tomorrow morning, it said.The floods have so far rendered hundreds of people homeless in Gopalganj, Muzaffarpur, Sitamarhi and Bagha.Villagers have now started returning to their villages following improvement of situation, sources said.
