At least seven children have died and dozens fell ill due to an unidentified disease in Bihar’s Araria district, officials said Tuesday. The children in Simaria village in Araria, about 400 km from here, suffered from high fever and a type of rash before they died, a district administration official said. Nearly half of the villagers have shifted to neighbouring villages in panic. “Some have already fled and others are planning to leave the village following the deaths,” villager Ghafoor Ahmad said. District civil surgeon Dhanushdhari Singh admitted to the deaths of the children due to the mysterious disease. “A medical team was sent to the village for treatment,” he said. But the villagers said the team returned without treating anyone.

This article is from the 19th of March, likely describes the same outbreak, and sure sounds like several illnesses to me, with an emphasis on diarrheal illness. Might not have been measles after all. This article also drags out the time frame on this "outbreak" - it took place over many weeks, if not months.

I didn't put this through a translator, but it looks like the source did. The mention of a "chicken" is likely an errant translation.

Visceral leishmaniasis (VL), also known as kala-azar, black fever, and Dumdum fever,[1]:426 is the most severe form of leishmaniasis. Leishmaniasis is a disease caused by protozoan parasites of the Leishmania genus. It is the second-largest parasitic killer in the world (after malaria), responsible for an estimated 500,000 cases each year worldwide.[2] The parasite migrates to the internal organs such as liver, spleen (hence 'visceral)' and bone marrow and if left untreated will almost always result in the death of the host. Signs and symptoms include fever, weight loss, mucosal ulcers, fatigue, anemia and substantial swelling of the liver and spleen. Of particular concern, according to the World Health Organization (WHO), is the emerging problem of HIV/VL co-infection.

The article in post #3 actually has the word "visceral" in it, so I think you're right in the guess that some of this is visceral leishmanisis. And the symptoms are right too. I think there is also some diarrheal illness there, too.

300 children suffering from mysterious disease in Muzaffarpur


Muzaffarpur, Apr 10 : About 300 children fell sick after mysterious disease afflicted them at different places in the district during the past one week.


Official sources said here today about 300 children were admitted to different Health Centres as they were suffering with a mysterious disease which was yet to be ascertained.

Head of the Department of Medicine in Srikrishna Medical Hospital Dr Brajmohan said all such patients had symptoms matching with that of Encephalitis Syndrome.

Samples of some patients had been sent for test which would confirm nature of the ailment.

Meanwhile, District Civil Surgeon Dr Arjun Prasad said he had directed all the hospitals, including the Primary Health Centres, to refer such patients to Patna Medical College Hospital.

District Magistrate Aanand Kishore has urged the state Health Department to send a team of doctors having specialisation to treat patients suffering with Encephalitis disease.

The disease affected almost 50 million are struggling through life and death. Kala-azar disease, according to the technical supervisor Tulasiahi Sanjeev Kumar Sah, Kdmaaha, Mazoda, Lalamaniaan, Bellhi, Mron north, south Mron, Pariconch much havoc the disease.

People settled here SC is afflicted with the disease. He said after visiting various panchayats over 50 people are affected. He said that the medication for the control of pesticide being sprayed on a war footing and to eradicate Kala-azar patients surveyed Panchayats proper medication is being arranged. Also Mr. Sah also said that if the situation did not provide Sssamy drug will be more dangerous.

Today's update includes mention of the "outbreak" in Siktia village, as 6 cases of "abdominal pain" with one death, and gives the date of the outbreak as April 5th. Not sure if this is an additional death, or a clarification of earlier reports which may have suggested six deaths.

Notably, the population of the villages is being inconsistently reported as 100, 250, or 500.

Wow. With an onset date of March 21, looks like some of this really was measles after all (see first posts). Counts 42 cases with one death.

PATNA: The monsoon is a welcome break from the blistering heat but along with the cool showers come a variety of ailments. Both water and air borne diseases become rampant. On an average, 35 to 40 patients visit hospitals every day.

Around 12 cases of acute gastro-enteritis and four to five cases of acute hepatitis and Japanese encephalitis are reported at Patna Medical College Hospital alone on a daily basis.

Though not as severe as last year, cases of Japanese encephalitis is quite common this year. Symptoms include fever, headache, vomiting, convulsions and unconsciousness. "It's a fatal disease but timely vaccinations are of great help. The cases are mostly reported from Gaya, Chapra and other hilly areas," said Binod Kumar Mishra, senior resident medical officer, PMCH.

Skin infections are also common this season, both fungal and bacterial, due to excessive sweating and high moisture. "Malaria, kala-azar and dengue spread rapidly in Bihar," said Sanjeev Kumar of a private diagnostic centre, adding that upper respiratory tract infections of viral and seasonal nature are also quite prevalent this season. Pneumonia, influenza and viral fever with cold, cough and headache are general complaints.

ENT specialist, Chandra Shekhar from PMCH, said fungal infection in the ear is common because of humidity. In case water enters the ear, a warm cloth can be used to dry it. In case of cold and cough, ear pain can lead to hearing problem and accumulation of pus. "It can be very damaging as ear drums can rupture and must be dealt with immediately," warned Shekhar.

Similarly, "rhinitis" (infection of the nose) can occur leading to headache, nasal blockade and watery discharge. For the neck region, tonsil infection and laryngitis are common. If the voice turns hoarse one should never overstrain.
"Chances of urinary tract infection and other fungal infections are enhanced because of unhygienic habits and lack of awareness regarding personal hygiene," pointed out Shanti Rai, a renowned gynaecologist.

Chicken pox and measles are very common among children this season. Much care has to be taken to avoid DVD (diarrhoea, vomiting disease). MMR (measles, malaria, rubella) spreads through air but is preventable for which a booster dose of vaccination after four years should be administered to children.

Rota-virus (air-borne) cases are also very common among little ones, as also hepatitis A, which is water-borne and transmitted through the oro-fecal route. "Rota-virus vaccines are available in the market and are highly effective. For children upto three years, there is a 60 to 90 per cent chance of the infection occurring three to four times. So utmost care should be taken to keep the surroundings hygienic and pollution free," said Sanjay Prasad, paediatrician.
