Japanese encephalitis claims a life in Punakha
This is the first recorded case of the disease in the country
Mosquito: Following the death of a 20-year-old man from Tewang gewog in Punakha on August 15 due to Japanese encephalitis, Punakha hospital has been cautioning residents to remove mosquito-breeding areas like stagnant water, to avoid mosquito bites.
This was the first case of Japanese encephalitis recorded in the country.
Chief medical officer at Punakha hospital, Dr Choeda Gyeltshen, said the deceased, a former monk, was ill since July 31. His parents initially conducted local healing practices, when he suffered a severe headache.
?On August 2, he was brought in an ambulance to Punakha hospital in a subconscious state,? Dr Choeda Gyeltshen said. ?Suspecting meningitis, we referred him to Thimphu referral hospital the same day.?
