It is frightening to watch what’s going on with Japan’s nuclear plant at Fukushima. It is also worrying to watch the fear racing around the world as a result of those events, fear that in some cases is far in excess of what’s going on, or even the worst case scenarios of what might happen.

The Japanese are facing the danger of a meltdown and release of dangerous amounts of radiation into the environment.

But the world is facing the risk of getting the risk of nuclear power wrong, and raising the overall risk to public and environmental health far more in the process. It is vitally important to keep our fears in perspective as we weigh all our energy choices in a world confronted both by climate change, and by several hundred thousand premature deaths from local particulate pollution from burning fossil fuels each year.

There is serious trouble at the Daiichi plant. Explosions, releases of low levels of radiation, failure of cooling systems, damage to the nuclear reactor. A meltdown of at least some of the highly radioactive fuel seems frighteningly probable. The word ‘catastrophe’ is showing up more and more in the news, and is a realistic possibility.

But the Japanese themselves have taught us, in the most awful way imaginable, what the actual health danger of radiation like this might be, and we need to keep the lessons of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in mind as we assess how catastrophic events like this actually are.

We know from studying the survivors of those bombings, who were bathed in horrific doses of high level radiation - far worse than anything that could come from the Daiichi plant (or that came out of Chernobyl) - that ionizing radiation from nuclear energy is a carcinogen, but a relatively weak one. The roughly 100,000 survivors of the two atomic bomb blasts are known in Japan as hibakusha, and they are honored, and given special rights.

They have also been extensively studied, and 66 years later, by comparing them to cancer rates among Japanese not exposed to radiation, public health researchers estimate that only about 500 of the hibakusha died prematurely from cancer due to radiation exposure. Radiation-induced cancer killed roughly half of one percent of the exposed population. (This research is done by the Radiation Effects Research Institute, a Japanese organization supported by international public health agencies)

We also know that many of the children of hibakusha women pregnant at the time they were exposed suffered horrible birth defects. Studies of the atomic bomb survivors have also taught us, however, that there is apparently no generational genetic impact from radiation exposure. Kids born to parents who got pregnant after the exposure, were normal.

Based on studies of atomic bomb survivors, the World Health organization estimates the maximum lifetime death toll from cancer due to radiation exposure from Chernobyl, of roughly 800,000 people, will be about 4,000.

And what about environmental damage? A huge area around Chernobyl is off limits to humans for hundreds of years. But that’s to limit human exposure to ionizing radiation which, while dangerous, is less so than many of us presume. With people removed, wildlife in those areas is thriving

So why the nuke-o-noia? It is human nature that when we hear about a risk, we react quickly and instinctively, before we have all the facts, by interpreting the first facts we hear through what we already know. (The academics called this the ‘representativeness’ heuristic.)

And something called Confirmation Bias we listen to and believe the people and information that confirms what we already believe - means that anybody predisposed against nuclear power will magnify the scarier aspects of what’s going on. (There is a long and frightening list of heuristics and biases that contribute to the instinctive way we make judgments here.)

On top of that, psychologists have found that risks have certain ‘personality traits’, psychological characteristics that make some feel scarier than others. Nuclear power is scary because it is invisible and odorless, which means we can’t detect it and protect ourselves, and feeling like we lack control makes any risk scarier.

I agree with the SA guest blogger, (see his statement of potential conflict of interest), that overestimating risk could cause needless anxiety and bad trade-offs, but underestimating risk can lead to bad consequences, too. I think the ongoing nuclear reactor emergency in Japan might be a case that was driven by that tendency.

Chernobyl Birds' Defects Link Radiation, Not Stress, to Human Ailments

Twenty years after the infamous catastrophe at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant, scientists were cheered by the explosion of wildlife that seemed to be thriving in the 19-mile (30-kilometer) "exclusion zone" around the disaster site.

Healthy-looking deer, boar, lynx, and eagle owls were among the animals found throughout the zone, despite the blast that had showered radioactive material over huge swaths of Belarus, Ukraine, and Russia (see a map of Europe).

But a new study shows that barn swallows living near Chernobyl, which is in Ukraine, suffer from many more birth defects and abnormalities than would ordinarily be expected.

In addition, the swallows are not living as long and are not breeding as successfully as their distant counterparts.

By studying birds rather than humans, the researchers have been able to separate the physiological effects of the radiation from sociological and psychological ones.

"Birds don't drink, birds don't smoke, and they don't suffer the same kind of stresses as humans" that can cause diseases such as cancers, said study co-author Tim Mousseau, a biology professor at the University of South Carolina and a National Geographic Society Committee for Research and Exploration grantee.

The findings therefore suggest that people living near the affected zone could still be at risk even though radiation levels have declined.....

Another risk is not mentioned. I was reading up on teratomas since the emerging disease of anti-NMDAR encephalitis is associated with ovarian and other teratomas found in young people and noticed this new study that refutes an earlier study done by the UN that did not find increased birth defects in the Chernobyl affected region they thought exposed to non-harmful levels of radiation.

Malformations in a Chornobyl-Impacted Region

RESULTS The overall rate of neural tube defects in Rivne is among the highest in Europe (22.2 per 10 000 live births). The rates of conjoined twins and teratomas also seem to be elevated. In Polissia, the overall rates of neural tube defects are even higher (27.0 vs 18.3, respectively; odds ratio: 1.46 [95% confidence interval: 1.13?1.93]), and the rates of microcephaly and microphthalmia may also be elevated.

CONCLUSIONS The malformation patterns observed suggest early disruptions of blastogenesis, manifesting as alterations of body axes, twinning, duplications, laterality, and midline formation. The results are sufficiently compelling to justify continuing and expanding this investigation of malformations in chronic low-dose radiation-impacted regions of Ukraine.

Chernobyl Birds Have Smaller Brains

Background

Animals living in areas contaminated by radioactive material from Chernobyl suffer from increased oxidative stress and low levels of antioxidants. Therefore, normal development of the nervous system is jeopardized as reflected by high frequencies of developmental errors, reduced brain size and impaired cognitive abilities in humans. Alternatively, associations between psychological effects and radiation have been attributed to post-traumatic stress in humans....

Conclusions/Significance

Low dose radiation can have significant effects on normal brain development as reflected by brain size and therefore potentially cognitive ability. The fact that brain size was smaller in yearlings than in older individuals implies that there was significant directional selection on brain size with individuals with larger brains experiencing a viability advantage.

This is a long term environmental risk as is the case with other forms of energy we commonly use. The use of the term "nuke-o-noia" is perhaps not the best communication strategy right now, even if hopefully the fears of a some people are unrealized.

While a normal over-reaction has its downside, so does under-reaction.

There are just too many coverups about negative public impacts - radiation, BigPharma, GMOs, etc, etc.

Radiation damage may vary with the stage of fetal development. But it's interesting that radiation therapy must be repeated for days to ensure it works at every "stage" of the cell cycle - just goes to show the importance of timing.

The neurological effects the one article mentioned are interesting. When reading about the complications of brain radiation (therapy), there are similar symptoms. They speculate that one of the causes is damage to the oliodendrocytes with resultant lesions. Given that the brain normally has the capacity to repair lesions and grow new neurons, something has clearly damaged that capacity - like oligodendrocytes.
