Stephanie Frobin and Dana Decristofaro are best friends at St. Francis Prep. But contracting a new strain of the flu was not their idea of togetherness.
The two 14-year-old freshmen are among hundreds at the private parochial high school in Fresh Meadows to come down with symptoms of swine flu. The school was closed Monday and Tuesday and cleaned over the weekend.

Stephanie?s mom, Gabriele Frobin, knew something was wrong when Dana fell asleep in the car on Friday and later slept for four hours at the Frobin?s Glendale residence.
Stephanie fell ill on Thursday, but felt well enough to return to school on Friday. That was before anyone knew about swine flu. She was sick all weekend with a cough, dizziness, headache and fever.
?I almost lost it on Sunday morning when Stephanie nearly passed out,? Gabriele Frobin said. ?She must have gotten dehydrated overnight, but after we gave her some juice she was better.?
Although her daughter wasn?t tested, she?s sure Stephanie contracted the swine flu. ?It really knocked my daughter out. I?ve never been so scared in my life,? she said.
Stephanie said feeling faint was the worst part of being sick. ?I felt awful,? she said. ?It?s horrible it started at Prep.?
Still suffering from a cough, Stephanie wasn?t sure if she would return to school on Wednesday. ?But I am concerned about missing classes,? she said.
Dana?s mom, Gail Decristofaro, brought her to the emergency room at North Shore-LIJ Medical Center on Saturday. They live in Floral Park.
?Her temperature was over 102 so I took her because of the bad fever and because she felt horrible,? Decristofaro said. ?She?s feeling a lot better now.?
Dana said she knew she had to get checked out at the hospital because ?my back, neck and shoulders hurt so badly and I wanted to sleep forever.?
She and her mother believe more students were affected by the illness than reported. ?My teacher told me 600 called in absent and half my math class was out sick,? Dana said.
Her mom said the malady ?hit the girls fast? and she hopes the school will be understanding about missed work. ?It?s scary, out of all the schools, why did it hit this one?? Gail Decristofaro asked.

They have said that none of the students at the high school needed to be hospitalized.

However, just because you aren't hospitalized doesn't mean the "mild symptoms" are a cakewalk.
