Some staff return after bird flu alert

A number of workers laid off by the Bernard Matthews food firm because of a bird flu outbreak earlier this year have been re-engaged, the company announced yesterday.
The turkey manufacturer said 32 staff had been taken back on and the number is set to rise to more than 100 in the coming weeks following an improvement in sales. A spokesman said: "Bernard Matthews is dedicated to doing everything possible to restore consumer confidence further and re-engage all laid-off employees as quickly as possible."
Around 277 workers were temporarily laid off as a result of the outbreak in February, but the firm said this had now been reduced to 216 following today's announcement and the voluntary decision of 22 members of staff to leave.
Miles Hubbard, of the Transport and General Workers Union, said he hoped the group of 32 who have been taken back will be the start of a steady return for the other 200-plus who remain at home. He said: "The T&G has stood by our people throughout this situation and worked with Bernard Matthews to try to limit the damage done by the bird flu outbreak.
"We remain convinced that the turkey products from this company are probably the safest on the market, which is why we are sure consumer demand for them will return."
