Bereaved father urges Globe readers to get swine flu jab

THE father of a Wirral schoolgirl whose daughter died from swine flu is hoping her tragic death might serve to remind readers to get vaccinated against the virus.

Olivia Rae Clee-Barnett was 17 when she contracted H1N1 swine flu and a secondary bacterial infection last December. She died in hospital in the early hours of Sunday, January 2.

NHS Wirral this month launched its seasonal flu campaign and Olivia Rae's father Ken Barnett said he believes there needs to be more education about flu vaccination and the risks people take by not getting it.

He said: "What we are asking for is a centrally-controlled campaign to promote the flu vaccination.

"Last year there was almost a media frenzy about flu. But the flu season started last week and it occurred to me that not much has been done to promote it fully.

"For us, the year's been spent coming to terms with what happened to Olivia and working out whether there's anything we can do to prevent anyone else suffering what we have."
