Benin / Adolphe Houssou, Health unionist: Covid-19 "… the number of cases is sometimes underestimated"

Even if the official government website for information on the evolution of the coronavirus pandemic in Benin seems to have been resting for the past few days, even if the counter, since the Minister of Health's release on Sunday, displays around 1300 confirmed cases, a third under treatment and 21 deaths, there is still cause for concern. Indeed, at the turn of an exclusive interview given to the online media, Crystal-New, Adophe Houssou (Photo), Spokesperson for the Collective of Health Unions in Benin, said that "Many health workers are now infected ”and that“ the statistical point of the cases of covid-19 is far from taking these people into account since the number is sometimes underestimated ”. A reality, he declares, of which Minister Benjamin Hounkpatin is aware and which draws his explanation from the fact that medical personnel lack the materials necessary for their protection and for exercising their profession properly in the service of patients. "The equipment is not available. We have always asked for no action. Bibs, gloves and others. We are forced to use a bib for a week when the standards recommend changing it every 4 hours, "denounces Health Human Resources Coordinator Adolphe Houssou.

Statements which, it must be said, are not likely to reassure. They add, in fact, to analyzes trying to locate the outbreak of infected cases of coronavirus in Benin, and which, for the most part, accuse the government in its insufficient management of this pandemic. If we recognize that health workers deserve to be at the forefront in this health crisis, wouldn't it be ideal to put them in the right conditions? An infected health worker who ignores it or is not taken care of quickly is a time bomb.
