Replying to questions in the Assembly, Animal Resources Development Minister Anisur Rahaman said that researchers at the University of Animal and Fishery Science were conducting studies to work out measures to prevent any further outbreak.
Culling of poultry had been done in all 18 districts of the state since the outbreak of bird flu. However, notification of the disease was not issued in East Midnapore and North Dinajpur districts.
Considering state government's request, the Centre had approved setting up of a testing centre in line with the Bhopal-based National Animal Research Laboratory, Rahaman said.
Stating that 2,091 self-help groups engaged in poultry farming were affected by the outbreak of avian influenza, he said their total loss stood at Rs 4,55,82,800.
A Rs 75 crore project, jointly with the Centre, had been taken up for distribution of sheep and goats to compensate for the loss of poultry.
Every family whose poultry had been culled would be paid Rs 500, while each self-help group which lost poultry would be provided with 10 to 12 chicks, the minister said.:tiphat: http://www.ptinews.com/pti/ptisite.nsf/$All/0FC3107E3E15AB0A6525749500441815?OpenDocument
