Woman dies of swine flu in southern Vietnam
Vietnam recorded its sixth death related to swine flu on Sunday as 220 new infections were confirmed the same day.
The 19-year-old female patient from the Mekong Delta province of Ben Tre exhibited symptoms of tiredness and difficulty breathing on September 3, but was only admitted to a local hospital two days later, the Ministry of Health said.
Only when she had a fever on September 7 did she take a test for the influenza A (H1N1) virus, known as swine flu, and receive additional treatment with the antiviral drug Tamiflu, according to the agency.
On September 11, Ho Chi Minh City?s Pasteur Institute, which conducted the test, said the young woman had tested positive for the flu.
The patient died at 9 a.m. the next day, three days after a nine-year-old boy die from the disease in the southern province of Dong Nai.
Also on Sunday, the government said 4,464 people had been affected with the disease since it emerged in the country in May.
More than half have been discharged after full recoveries.
