Belize battles new world screwworm outbreak – More cases confirmed
Posted: Monday, March 10, 2025. 5:41 am CST.

By Horace Palacio: The Belize Wildlife & Referral Clinic has warned about the New World Screwworm outbreak in southern Belize, urging farmers and pet owners to check their animals daily for signs of infection.

The warning comes after the Ministry of Agriculture confirmed 20 cases of the parasite, first detected in December 2024 in Toledo District. Despite efforts to contain the outbreak, 19 more cases have surfaced this year, including the first confirmed dog infection in January...

Screwworm Outbreak Spreads Beyond Initial Quarantine Zones in Belize
March 21, 2025 No Comment 358

Despite attempts by agricultural authorities to contain the outbreak of new world screwworm to the south, cases are now popping up in other areas. The latest information coming from the Ministry of Agriculture shows that there are now more than 30 confirmed cases in four of the six districts. The Belize Agricultural Health Authority (BAHA) is urging all animal owners to be vigilant and to take immediate action if they detect a suspected case. Dr. Roxanna Alvarez, Director of Animal Health at BAHA, says that the parasite, which was originally detected in cattle last December, has begun showing up in other animals...

Belize Records 63 Screwworm Cases Since December, No Human Infections Reported
Monday, April 28, 2025

Belize has recorded 63 cases of New World Screwworm (NWS) infections since the first case was detected on December 26, 2024, according to Minister of Agriculture, Food Security and Enterprise, Jose Abelardo Mai. The update was shared during a regional meeting in San Salvador, where Minister Mai is leading discussions among Agriculture Ministers from Central America, Mexico, and the Dominican Republic on controlling and eradicating the pest.

Minister Mai said that despite the absence of sterile fly releases in Belize, the country has managed to contain the spread, with no human infections confirmed and no cases reported in the Corozal District...

Belize records 70 cases of New World Screwworm
LoopNews 2 hrs ago

Belize has recorded 70 cumulative cases of New World Screwworm (NWS) as of May 3, prompting health authorities to update quarantine and movement protocols for animals in affected areas, according to an announcement from the Belize Agricultural Health Authority (BAHA).

In a press release issued Wednesday, BAHA and the Ministry of Agriculture, Food Security, and Enterprise (MAFSE) identified Toledo, Stann Creek, Cayo, and a portion of the Belize District up to Sandhill Village as NWS-infested areas.

“Within the infested area, the 90-day quarantine of facilities is no longer enforced, however, the requirements for New World Screwworm Health Inspection Certificates and Movement Permits remain in place,” the statement explained.

The authorities have implemented stricter measures for animals moving from infested to non-infested areas, which include Corozal, Orange Walk, and portions of the Belize District north of Sandhill...

EPIDEMIOLOGICAL COMMENTS

Fourteen (14) new cases of New World Screwworm (NWS) were reported. Of these, seven (7) cases were detected in canines, followed by five (5) in bovines, one (1) case in a porcine, and one (1) in an equine. The noticeable increase in cases among canines is of particular concern as part of sanitary education, pet owners are advised to routinely inspect their animals, promptly treat any wounds, and report suspected cases to the Belize Agricultural Health Authority (BAHA) or the Ministry of Agriculture. To prevent further spread of NWS to northern communities, the following control and prevention measures are being actively implemented: - Public awareness campaigns to educate farmers and pet owners on early detection through routine animal inspection, early notification, and proper wound care. - Movement control measures are used to reduce the risk of disease spread between districts. - Treatment of animals with wounds using appropriate parasiticides and antiseptics. - Surveillance activities, both passive and active, in high-risk and buffer zones. - Collaboration with local authorities and stakeholders to ensure rapid response and resource mobilization

EPIDEMIOLOGICAL COMMENTS

Stann Creek has become the fifth district in Belize to report confirmed cases of New World Screwworm (NWS), Cochliomyia hominivorax. Three cases were identified through passive surveillance. In two cases, lesions were located on the leg, while the third case involved a lesion in the scrotal area of a neutered animal. Upon detection, all affected animals were immediately treated with 1% Ivermectin and thoroughly disinfested. Veterinary officers conducted comprehensive herd inspections at both premises, and no additional cases were identified. Livestock and pet owners were advised to monitor their animals closely and to promptly report any suspicious lesions, with signs of myiasis, to the relevant authorities.

EPIDEMIOLOGICAL COMMENTS

Eight (8) cases of New World Screwworm (NWS) were reported; three (3) in canine, two (2) in porcine, one (1) in bovine, one (1) in equine, and one (1) in a rabbit. Of great concern is the increase in cases among companion animals, particularly in dogs, as interaction with stray animals is inevitable in urban communities, thereby increasing the risk of infestation. NWS presents an important opportunity for growth and collaboration within the One Health framework. Farmers and animal owners are strongly encouraged to implement and maintain sound animal husbandry practices, including regular inspection of animals for wounds, prompt and proper wound treatment, and immediate reporting of any suspected NWS cases to the Belize Agricultural Health Authority (BAHA) and the Ministry of Agriculture. Early detection and timely intervention remain key to preventing the spread of this parasitic infestation.
