Twenty-four municipalities in the Ardennes were placed under surveillance after the discovery of a new outbreak of avian flu in this department, the prefecture announced on Friday.

This new "highly pathogenic H5N8" outbreak was discovered "in a farmyard near Rethel, the prefecture said in a press release, recalling that another outbreak was detected in this department on January 28.

"Three cases have also been identified in wildlife in this department since the start of the year," she also said.

"Two regulated zones are defined within 3 km (protection zone) and 10 km (surveillance zone) radiuses around the concerned poultry yard", further detailed the prefecture.

Among the measures taken within this perimeter include the prohibition of "all movements of poultry and the transport of eggs" and the confinement of backyard poultry "in buildings or enclosures with the laying of nets on. the top in order to avoid any contact with wild or farmed birds ".

The discovery of this outbreak comes as the government decided on April 23 to reduce the risk level of avian influenza "to the moderate level throughout the territory", due to a "favorable development" in the situation. , according to a press release from the Ministry of Agriculture.
