Epidemiology in Belgium
As of October 3, 2022 a total of 775 confirmed cases of Monkeypox have been reported by the
regional administrations/governments in Belgium. These are 401 cases in Flanders (52%), 281
cases in Brussels (36%) and 93 cases in Wallonia (12%).
The figure below shows the breakdown by region and over time. The last reported case (for
which information is available) reported experiencing symptoms on September 26, 2022.
If the date of onset of symptoms is unknown, the date of diagnosis or notification is
used. The number of new cases is on a downward trend (based on data
consolidated).

Among the cases for which the sex is known (n=772, 99.6%) there are 764 men, 5 women, and 3
people who identify differently. The age of the vast majority of them is between 16
and 71 years old. One case has been reported in a child less than three years old.
Symptom information is known for 687 individuals (88.6%). Almost all the
patients (96%) had skin lesions, which were mainly in the anal-genital
region (n=444, 65%). About 69.4% had general symptoms such as fever,
general malaise,… 39 of the 687 people (6%) for whom the information is known were
hospitalized; 28 due to treatment (4 of them had an underlying immune disorder),
3 because home isolation was not possible, and 8 because the reason was unknown.
To date, one death has been reported in a person with underlying health conditions.
Based on current data on presumptive transmission (n=574) it appears that the virus is
mainly transmitted through sexual contact (92%).
Among all cases, 152 (32.5%) were able to identify a specific contact with another confirmed case.
Most people for whom information is available (549/667, 82%) had an idea
of the place or the suspected context where the infection was transmitted. Sexual contact in context
private were most often mentioned (270/547, 49.4%). National or foreign events
major events, during which people had sexual contact, were mentioned by 78
(14%) people. Sex saunas or other places that facilitate sexual contact were identified
by 119 men (21.8%). Attendance at a party, household, or other unrelated activity
Sexual contact was reported for 17 people (3.1%). In the latter context, transmission may have
take place person to person, through very close but non-sexual contact. While at the start,
infection was mainly reported through sexual contact at major events,
now most of the reported cases are related to sexual contact in the private sphere.
It should be noted that the collection and interpretation of this data is limited by the fact that it is
very sensitive information.
