Belgium says coronavirus peak still ahead

BRUSSELS (Reuters) - The peak of Belgium's coronavirus infections still lies ahead, the health ministry said on Thursday, adding much will depend on how strictly people follow lockdown measures.

Belgium, a country of some 11.5 million people, has so far confirmed 6,235 coronavirus cases and reported 220 deaths due to the disease, which is now ravaging Europe after originating in China late last year.

The government will discuss on Friday whether to extend the lockdown, meant to curb the spread of the virus, beyond April 5.

In the last 24 hours, 1,850 new cases of infection by the coronavirus (Covid-19) have been confirmed in Belgium, according to the government crisis centre’s daily press conference.

The new cases bring the total to 9,134 confirmed cases in Belgium.

The new numbers were divided among the three regions: 823 (44%) in Flanders, 875 (47%) in Wallonia and 134 (7%) in Brussels. The sudden increase in cases in Wallonia – 875 today, up from 131 yesterday – was explained by the fact that one major testing centre was reporting cases, some 500 in all, not only from the last 24 hours but from the past several days.

That implies that figures from recent days, both overall and in relation to Wallonia in particular, have been distorted, and that the large increase reported today does not accurately reflect the daily evolution.

BRUSSELS — Belgian authorities say a 12-year-old girl has died of the coronavirus, by far the youngest person among the more than 700 victims in the country.

Announcing the news Tuesday, national crisis-center coronavirus spokesman Emmanuel Andre said it is “an emotionally difficult moment, because it involves a child, and it has also upset the medical and scientific community.”

“We are thinking of her family and friends. It is an event that is very rare, but one which upsets us greatly,” Andre said. No details about the girl were provided.

He said that 98 people had died from the disease over the last 24 hours, bringing the total toll to 705 in a country of around 11.5 million people. More than 12,705 cases have been confirmed in total so far.

Andre said that Belgian authorities expect the spread of the disease to reach its peak in coming days, and that “we will arrive at a point where we’re close to saturation point at our hospitals.”

12-year-old Belgian girl from Ghent dies from coronavirus: Europe's youngest victim

Published on Tuesday, March 31, 2020 at 12:08 p.m. - Updated Tuesday March 31, 2020 at 5:12 pm

The FPS Public Health, as every day, took stock of the coronavirus epidemic in our country. Virologists have announced the death of a 12-year-old girl, the youngest European victim today.
After the painful deaths of Vitor, Portuguese, 14 , and Julie, French, 16 , the youngest deceased coronavirus victim identified in Europe is Belgian. " It is an emotionally very difficult moment because it affects a child and it also affects the medical and scientific community. We especially think of his family and loved ones ", commented, not without emotion, the inter-federal spokesperson Emmanuel Andr? at the daily press conference . "It is an event that is very rare but that upsets us, " he said. Steven Van Gucht, another spokesperson, said the 12-year-old girl died on Saturday."She tested positive for coronavirus. Within three days, her condition suddenly deteriorated due to a high fever and she died on Saturday," he said. Van Gucht said on the VTM television news that the girl was not suffering from an underlying disease. "This is what we know at the moment, but we are awaiting confirmations," he said.

Indeed, this death is an exception because young people are not the people most affected by the coronavirus. But neither are they naturally immune, and deaths can occur, too, in the younger age groups.

She hadn't been to school since March 13

The 12-year-old victim had not been to school since March 13, said the city of Ghent, where he was from. She had not had contact with the school team for three weeks.

The City of Ghent and its teachers express their sympathy and are in close contact with the girl's family to support them, we learned Tuesday afternoon. "We are asking everyone to give the family the peace and space they need to cope with this situation."

"It is particularly tragic. As a human being and a father, I am very deeply affected," said bourgmestre Mathias De Clercq (Open Vld). "Ghent and the whole country are united in immense pain. Our thoughts and sympathies go out to the family, to the De Harp school community. As a city, we will give them our full support during this extremely difficult period."

This little twelve-year-old Belgian is the youngest victim of the coronavirus in Belgium, but also in Europe. Last Sunday, Portugal announced the death of a young boy of fourteen, who however did not present any particular pathology before being contaminated by Covid-19. In France, a 16-year-old girl also died, affected by " an extremely rare severe form " of the virus.

1,011 people have died from the consequences of the new coronavirus (Covid-19) in Belgium, the FPS Public Health said during a daily press briefing.

On Friday, the FPS reported that 578 new patients with coronavirus had been admitted to the hospital the previous day. With 536 new hospitalisations reported on Monday, 485 on Tuesday, 560 on Wednesday, and 584 on Thursday, the number seems to be fluctuating “roughly between 500 and 600 new cases every day,” said professor Steven Van Gucht. “The stabilisation is encouraging,” he added.

“That is still high, but it is a good sign that it does not seem to be increasing. It is a possibility that we are reaching a peak or a plateau, but we will have to see that in the coming days,” Van Gucht said, adding that the figure of new hospitalisations is “the most important and reliable figure” to predict the situation, according to him.

Coronavirus: Belgium reaches 16,770 confirmed cases

1,422 new people have tested positive for the new coronavirus (Covid-19), confirmed the FPS Public Health during a press conference on Friday.

865 of the newly-infected people live in Flanders, 374 live in Wallonia, and 167 live in Brussels. The FPS does not yet have further information on the place of residence of 16 other people. The total number of cases in Belgium, since the beginning of the pandemic, is 16,770.

The total number of people admitted to hospital because of the coronavirus at the moment is 5,552. “This is an increase of 578 patients in one day,” said professor Steven Van Gucht. Of those patients, 1,205 are in the intensive care unit.

However, 377 new people have also been discharged from the hospital in the last 24 hours.

132 new deaths have been reported, 60 of which occurred in Flanders, 51 in Wallonia, and 21 in Brussels. The total number of deaths in Belgium since the beginning of the pandemic is currently 1,143.

The number of new hospital admissions of coronavirus patients in Belgium is stabilising, a sign that the lockdown is working, the Belgian government has said. “Even if the number of people still being admitted to hospital is going up, this number is no longer increasing steeply,” said Emmanuel Andr?, a scientist and spokesman for Belgium’s crisis centre. We are heading towards a situation of mastering the propagation of the epidemic, even if very substantial efforts are still needed. Belgium has been locked down for three weeks. The government has said that the restrictions will stay in place until at least April 19, with the possibility of extending them until May 3. A total of 5,678 people are in hospital with Covid-19, up from 5,552 in Friday’s data, official figures showed on Saturday. Just over 500 were hospitalised on Friday. A total of 3,247 patients have recovered and left hospital since March 15. The rate of new hospitalisations “is the best indirect indicator of the extent to which we are mastering this epidemic”, said Mr Andr?.

https://www.brusselstimes.com/all-ne...40-new-deaths/
In the last 24 hours, 1,661 new cases of infection by the coronavirus (Covid-19) have been confirmed in Belgium, according to the government crisis centre’s daily press conference.

The new cases bring to 18,431 the total of confirmed cases in Belgium.
....

Of the newly confirmed cases, 503 have been hospitalised, bringing the total to 7,773, of whom 1,245 are in intensive care, 40 in the last 24 hours. The ICU capacity in the country is filled to the tune of 56%. 985 people are on respirators, an increase of 69 in the past 24 hours.

The last 24 hours saw 140 new fatalities, bringing the total to 1,283 since the outbreak began. Of the latest deaths, 47 were in Flanders, 56 in Wallonia and 37 in Brussels.

The crisis centre stressed a point it has made before: the number of hospitalisations is a more reliable indicator of the progress of the epidemic than either the number of diagnoses or the number of deaths.

The number of diagnoses, Emmanuel Andr? pointed out, is reliant on the number of people tested. Since the government plans to increase the number of tests to at least 10,000 a day, more confirmed diagnoses can be expected, which is not to say that more people are becoming infected. Many of those diagnosed will be affected only slightly or not at all.

The number of deaths, meanwhile, is a more dramatic figure, but two points are important: the cases of a fatal infection are not spread equally across the population; and deaths typically occur later in the disease process, so that today’s numbers reflect confirmed cases of infection and hospitalisation reported two weeks ago at least, according to virologist Steven Van Gucht.

Therefore, while the number of deaths remains high – just one short of the highest death tool in a single day recorded on March 31 – that is not a sign that the measures taken to prevent the spread of the disease are not working.

1,260 new patients have tested positive for the novel coronavirus (Covid-19) in the last 24 hours, bringing the total number of confirmed cases in Belgium to 19,691.

The data does not reflect the exact number of people affected by Covid-19, since it depends on the number of people being tested.

164 people have died in the last 24 hours from coronavirus, bringing a total of 1,447 deaths from coronavirus in Belgium.

1,123 new people have tested positive for the new coronavirus (Covid-19), confirmed the FPS Public Health during a press conference on Monday.

686 of the newly-infected people live in Flanders, 262 live in Wallonia, and 137 live in Brussels. The FPS does not yet have further information on the place of residence of 38 other people. The total number of cases in Belgium, since the beginning of the pandemic, is 20,814.

420 new patients were admitted to the hospital in the last 24 hours, bringing the total number of people in the hospital because of the coronavirus at the moment to 5,840. “Of those patients, 1,257 are in the intensive care unit, which is a decrease of 4,” said professor Steven Van Gucht.

235 new people have also been discharged from the hospital in the last 24 hours.

185 new deaths have been reported, 60 of which occurred in Flanders, 80 in Wallonia, and 45 in Brussels. The total number of deaths in Belgium since the beginning of the pandemic is currently 1,632. “Of those deaths, 80% are people who died in the hospital and tested positive for the virus. The other 20% are suspected coronavirus related deaths outside the hospitals,” said Van Gucht.
